Hey Northern-- how about using Rito 6I6? Supposed to be one of the tops in the angus breed for docility and making quiet momma cows...He doesn't ring all the bells and blow all the whistles of performance that some want- but pretty moderate across the boards...

I agree with handfeeding bulls and heifers....Even if I'm only giving them a half a coffee can on average of pellets or oats - I hand feed the heifers for several weeks after weaning- and hand feed the bulls- young and old- all winter- just so they become used to people and someone walking around thru them...

thats a good choice in my book. semen availablity could be an issue before to long. my rep told me this spring they are not collecting on him anymore and figured they only had enough semen banked to get through one more breeding season. maybe they didn't sell as much as they thought they would, but i bet they did. he is a cow maker :D

Got some 340 semen located for the Max cow and some chief 811 for the red cows. I just checked out Diamond D's website-I kind of like the Fahren bull-my neighbor has kind of flooded the country with Occ genetics. Got a good set of commercial heifers sourced today-Really Windy and Final Answer granddaughtersif I put them with the Fraser heifers that are coming I'll have a nice set to breed.

340 is a good choice...
Fahren of Wye would be a good choice- as Favour is thought of by many as one of the best cowmaker Wye bulls.. His son DDA Fahren 21X would also add in Bear of Wye on the bottom side- another strong Wye maternal bull....

Another Wye bull that incorporates those two even closer up in the pedigree is Bannon of Wye UMF 8240-- owned by Whitney Creek Ranch and Horse Butte Ranch... The old bull is dead now- and there is a limited amount of semen- so now he'll probably become popular

That Bannon bull is the right kind-I don't know how I'd get semen up here that Canadian distributor is a bit sketchy. They sold a bunch of 41'97 semen up here and the guys were getting baldie calves-the stud in New Zealand had simmy and Angus semen in the same straw-they weren't very proffessional or prompt in settling the issue-kind of nickle and dimed it. It's too bad the one 41'97 calf that came out pure at my buddies is a pretty decent bull-not as toady as his sire.

Used some EXT blood here in the past, didn't take long to see that we wanted to stay away from them especially since this is a mom and pop and kids outfit.

I agree with Soapweed on the hand feeding really gentles cattle down. I hand feed my replacement heifers. They are gathered every day out of a small pasture with a horse until they start coming in on their own, gets them used to being moved with horses too. The difference shows up when calving the 2 yr olds. Several years ago I was short of feed and had my heifers wintered in a feedlot, boy what a difference come calving time. Some otherwise good cows went down the road that fall due to disposition. I'll buy feed and keep them home if I get that short of feed again.

I culled out all the high heads and old witchs including the "witch from Hell" cow (No EXT-but part simmi) - over the last few weeks....

Two of the Grandkids are out for the weekend- and have 3 friends with them  ... Since its about 0 with a cool ENE wind making the wind chill about 20 Below I fed just behind one of the haystacks because it makes a good wind break....A few minutes ago I looked out- and all those kids (and the dogs) were playing cowboys and Indians in that stackyard--but those old cows were no more excited by those kids than the man in the moon....

Cedarcreek, we too put some heifers in a feedlot ONCE...and they came
back with different dispositions than the rest of the cows. We too, sold
some of these good young cows as opens (even tho they were bred) after they raised just one calf. We wouldn't want anyone to have to deal with those things as mother cows.

Northern- another bull that has some unique old breeding (707, 054, Viking)- and is known for his ability to make mother cows is C H Quantum 6247 Reg #12687606 ...
But again this is another that I'm not sure is cleared for Canada or who even has semen on him...The Cole Creek catalog says he has reached pathfinder status now- so someone must have semen on him..
