We finally got our mortgage papers signed and everything legal for buying half of the land from my folks. They gave us a great deal on it, and the people at Farm Credit Canada were great to deal with too. Of course, that may have had something to do with the fact that the land is worth 4 times what we paid for it.lol

Sure feels good to finally get it done, for us, and the folks. With the stroke of a pen, we feel like all the money we're putting into fencelines, grass development and such is worthwhile.

farming rented ground just don't feel the same as working on your OWN place ! I can run over many many acres, then pull into one of my own fields, and I just feel more "alive".

funny how it affects you.

my dad in laws father never bought land. he lived through the depression and was affraid to borrow money...... dad in law swears that is what pushed him to buy, seeing the one fear his father had, and pushing to make sure it never held him back.

Congratulations :) May you and your family be truely blessed! *POP* That was me uncorking the champagne to celebrate with you!

Congrats. PureCountry; Succession is one of the most complex issues a farm family can face.......It's tough to retire the older generation with enough financial security for retirement without jeoprodizing the viability of the family taking over. Good luck......sounds like you've got the bases covered!

Good luck. We worked at it for years before we could make a deal we both could live with.

I always felt like we should have paid my mom more, but then, we would have never made it either.

Glad you got the deal done. Hope all goes well for you. :)

Succession planning went quite well once we got some decent help. Some of Northern Rancher's neighbours came andspent a couple of days with us. Don and Bev Campbell from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. They spent a few hours with my folks, then with us, then all of us came together and discussed what everyone wanted. When we weeded out all the crap and got down to the guts of it, it became fairly plain and simple of what needed doin'.

Don and Bev are wonderful people, and great at what they do - help people. Don is a Holistic Management Instructor.

Good for you Pure :) Living on the family place has its advatages and disadvantages but trust me the good outwieghs the bad,and yes I'm talking from expierence.Hopefully someday you'll be able to do the same for those little boys of yours.

Congratulations pure country....... There is no greater feeling than working to own your own place..... I know the feeling.... And to think that you are now working on a second generation is really special.. Well done..
I think the first year for us was the hardest... But now, I wouldn't change a thing...

Thanks folks. Actually Katrina, I'm the 4th generation on our place. My boys make 5. Course, I shouldn't say just boys, since we don't know what's coming with the next little bun in the oven. Feb. 22nd is the due date, so we'll find out soon enough I reckon.

Even though I was just a kid (less than 10 by a considerable amount) I remember when my dad and mom bought the "old home place" from my dad's aunt and uncle. It was definately a time for celebrating, because dad got what he wanted (even though mom was less than thrilled with the deal) and Auntie and Uncle Joe were able to take it a little easier, since Uncle Joe was in poor health and had been for a long time. Those mining days of his took their toll. Auntie, however, is still kickin around, she turned 101 on Sunday!

Congrats to you and your family, pure country.........and on the new addition to your family, too. You hadn't told me you were "expecting".......
