Something tells me that Rena doesn't take any of the guys bull....

Rena tends bar two nights a week. I have teased her by saying, "Do you know how many respectable young men you are turning into drunks just because the only reason they come to the bar is because you are there?"

She just grins.

Don't leave us hanging, Soap! Was the calf okay?

It was twins. The first had the head coming but the feet were back. The second was feet first but head back. Both were born dead. Give me one good calf any day. Twins are not what they are cracked up to be. :?

Sorry to hear about your heifer. Always a bummer to get them this far, and have them mess up :? . You must have had milder weather than I did today. It's always a nice break to be able to shed heavy coats and gloves :D .

It wasn't quite as nice as it looked. I had stripped down to shirt sleeves and put on a plastic glove to grope around in the dark depths of the expectant mother. You can see that the glove leaked, and the bottom of my sleeve got saturated with amniotic fluid. The head was turned wrong and I got it coming the right direction but was having trouble getting the feet out from underneath. Peach came along and saved the day. Her slimmer arms fit down in there better, and she has that sensitive woman's touch. Sunflower was on hand to capture the moment on film. I thought Kola would be interested to see that I was still just mainly standing around letting my womenfolk do all the work. Trouble is, chances are she won't see these pictures because she doesn't look at 90% of them. :-)

Must be keeping "Scott" manufacturing in business, with all those blue panels. I have a Scott crowding tub, I would assume thats what those panels are that you have.

Jerry Scott is a good friend, and I like his products. His portable corrals, especially, are the best on the market in my book. The connecting latches are what make them the best. You can set them up on uneven ground; you don't need any additional rods, and they don't come loose from each other. Besides, blue is such a soothing color.

Very coordinated. But I was wondering about the reins, because I think I may know the braider. The handy work looks familiar.

I got them at Jack's Tack in Valentine. He may have told me who made them, but if he did I can't recall the name. I really like this type of reins, and they stand the test of time quite well.

Well shoot that is no fun. I was hoping maybe it was a gentelman that use to live in that area with the initials D.R. He taught me everything I know about braiding, but my stuff could never hold a candle to his worst work. I have been so out of touch that I don't even know if he is still with us.

Just to give you a hint as to who I am, we use to take care of the East end of the AX ranch, back when it was the AX. I am the youngest of the kids.

I got a forward from Mom about your use of last names in church that came from your Dad, so I had to come check out all the pictures here. Quite good work.

Hope to see more pics in the future. It takes me back.

Welcome to Ranchers.Net twister. We sure miss you and your family. What great people you all are. I know you are very talented in your "civilian" occupation and making lots more money than you ever could in the ranching business, but nonetheless the cattle business lost a darn fine hand and top cowboy when you chose to leave the industry.

Don Roth used to make some very fine braided handiwork with both rawhide and parachute cord. He is still going strong, even though he is probably nearly 90 years old. I hauled my horse Tom Cat around to a lot of brandings every spring so Don could use that good gentle horse to heel calves. I think Don still roped a lot of calves the spring he was 82. Nobody dragged any more calves to the branding fire in any given time period than did Don riding ol' Tom Cat.

Good to hear from you, twister. Tell your family all hello.

One quick memory: do you remember when your sister was singing at my sister's outdoor wedding and the bull snake fell out of a tree right at her feet? She didn't miss a note and kept on singing completely unflustered. :-)

Thank you for your comments. I am not sure I deserve them, but thank you. When you have neighbors and friends as fine as you and your family, some of it is bound to wear off.

I do remember the snake falling out of the tree, but for some reason I am finding it hard to believe that my sister would have stuck around. Maybe she was in professional singing mode, and didn't let it phase her. ha ha

Glad to hear that Don is still around. I was fortunate enough to get to use one of his rawhide reatas(sp) a few times at some of the brandings. That was a big treat.

Good luck with calving! Looks like you have some good help.
