I told myself this year I wasn't gonna be fussy. I was gonna shoot the first legal bull I saw. So I did, five minutes into the season, and now we have a nice oat fattened elk for the winter.
I couldn't find bullets for my 30.06 (my firearm of choice) :oops: , so I 'borrowed' my wifes 7mm-.08 and shot him at 285 yds through the heart. Bullet made it to the hide on the far side in one piece, nicely mushroomed. Cant ask for much more than that.

Oh, and this elk dressed out at 584lbs.

Here's a pic of it hanging, you can see how fat it is, and how white the fat is. And, as all us rancher / hunters know, the tractor is indispensable as part of the dressing process. :wink:

pretty nice bull.I would love a chance at one sometime.

We have some oat eating critters here also.An 85 year old lady lets her dairy cows run wild as a beef herd kinda of deal. They run all over in the wild life management area of which I rent some of it. Needless to say 50 head of cows can wipe out a marginal oat crop pretty quickly.
 
Nice bull elk, Silver, that should provide some very good eating. That is a fine young man there to help you. All that green countryside appears green and productive. Looks like you are enjoying living the good life and are a lucky man. :-)

So would a wild dairy cow taste like mature veal? :???: :wink:
 
Pretty nice elk Silver and definitely nice and fat. Certainly good to fill the freezer and to make a new hat rack in the new house too, so a very multipurpose animal. We used to have the same problem in our greenfeed, but we don't farm anymore so now the neighbor who doesn't allow hunting and so shelters the elk through hunting season gets to enjoy watching his crops getting eaten by a hundred or two elk. Life is good!

My wife say's were about out of burger maybe I should find out get a payment on my feed. :wink:
 
Nice elk,silver........you're sure right about tractors and dressing game,makes a hard job some what easier..............good luck
