I have found a few goos used trucks that will be selling this summer... and there are a few 1998 Chevy Extended Cab 6.5 Turbo Diesel... Has anybody had any experiences with them? I have a buddy with one and he swears by it, but there must be a few weak points to them.

BTW, it is a 1/2 ton, not a 3/4.

Well, once I get it and put the lift and the 35" Mud Terrains on it, I'll just have to come out to show greg what a Chevy can do... and what a FORD can't. :P:P

Oh, just so you know, ford has the problem circled

One question..Why a diesel? Do you pull a lot of loads? diesel now costs more than gas..A few guys around here are going back to gas jobs cause of the high cost of diesel.
As far as truck brands go i could never buy a chev cause they cost to much.. I drive a ford or a dodge whichever is cheaper at the time i am shopping..

Stay away from the 6.5 diesel.......there's no end of fixing there and can be very expensive! Get yourself a gas engine if you want a Chevy and you'll be OK. OH BTW if you're getting wheels and are already dating prepare yourself for a lifetime of being broke.......

Here, diesel is still cheaper then gas. And yes, it will be put to work, pulling my toys, the stock trailer, and I can't find a chevy with good gas mileage. Also, because I DO have livestock, I may be legible for farm plates for my truck, and if I have farm plates, I can buy farm diesel in bulk and save money like that. Throughout the spring and the fall, it will be the 'farm truck'.

Les, I'm a Chev boy, and I could be persuaded to get a Dodge but not a Ford. haha. I can get a good deal on one of these 6.5's. I have not been looking at Dodge but I might have to.

cowsense, I'm used to it . And no I am not dating at the moment, just kinda-sorta. I won't be buying a truck for a few months yet, I need to get another job to afford it. :P:D

Had a chev with a 6.2 for about 500,000 k was great on fuel . But I've been told 6.5 's run a little hot and fuel pump probs. Too POOR to drive a Chev  Too PROUD to drive a Dodge :P I PUSH a Ford :cowboy:

Never had a Chevy with a 6.5, but have heard stories about them. Don't buy it, it'll just end up costing you money. We have a 97 extended cab Chev, gas. It gets 25 mpg. That's better than my car.

I'm a Chevy man but I agree with the others on the older GM diesels. If you lucked out and got a good one that would be great but the 6.5 has a "reputation" as a money pit. Anything you might save on fuel likely will be eaten up and then some by repair costs.

For your needs I'd say go with a '90s GM small block that has been taken care of.

I had a 6.5 and when it was running it was ok. It went through a couple of pumps and a few sets of glow plugs. My wife didn't like the smell in the garage when it was started. I went to an 8.1 gas. It will run circles around the 6.5 on about the same mileage and my wife is happy!

ACS........ The 6.2 was a decent road engine-good mileage but not heavy enough for towing much. They're getting aged and I still say buy a gas job..........................or really economize and buy a bicycle :P

ACS....................Perhaps it's time to realize that anything you acquire that wears tits or tires will keep you dead broke; run the snot outta the old man's truck for as long as he'll let ya :P
P.S...........the bike is the environmentally acceptable transportation method so you may have to search a little harder to find the babes that go for that stuff!!!

See that's the problem, Dad WANTS me to get my own truck already

Besides, the girl I got picked out is a country raised, good looking, sled riding, truck driving, hunting and fishing girl. I dont wanna have her see me posing as a tree hugger... she will shoot me :O lol

come on, no gal can resist a bike man!!!
