immediately put ice on the shoulder...a BIG bag and keep it on there for at least 20 minutes....if you feel "pins and needles" going down your arm or if your shoulder just does not "look right" or if you are unable to move your arm out in front of you, then you MUST GET TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!!! Broken shoulders are NOTHING to mess with!!!! Good luck, young man and KEEP US POSTED on how you are doing!! Prayers with you for a speedy recovery!!

Well, I did cowboy up-wrassled calves all day with a shoulder out of it's joint. :o We had someone look at it-they used to be a Dr., and he popped it back in for me-hurt like the dickens though. lol. He said there might be a strained tendon or something else-Sore to move my arm, but other than that, it is just annoying. lol.

*ahem* yes, I did try, and Im branding her to send her to communitty pasture next weekend. lol

How's your shoulder today, ACS?

I had just about the same thing happen to me, not quite a year after we got married.

We were going to break a mule to pack, for my dad, and were trying to catch him from the rest of the bunch in a huge barbed wire trap/corral deal over on the wilderness.

We finally got him and about 3 other equine specimens in the corral part, and Hubby roped him, but lost the rope. Astro (the mule, short for Astronaut, or as I preferred to call him, AstroNut  ) was running around the corral, dragging the rope behind him.

Hubby said if I could get off my mare, and get hold of the rope and hand it to him, he thought we could get Astro down to the better corrals, and get a halter on him. So, I did. Got off Raven, sneaked up on Astro and got the end of the rope, but before Hubby could get it, Astro spooked, and here we went, off across the corral at a lope...me taking some of the biggest steps I've ever taken in my life!

About the time he got to the other side of the corral, my feet got tangled up in something (still have no idea what) and I went down, landing right on my right shoulder. I, too, heard the pop. I was completely useless then, so Hubby drove Astro and the other equine specimens down to the house, got the pickup and came back to get me. We all thought my collar bone was broken, and off we headed to town, 60+ miles of some awful, bone-jarring dirt road.

The collar bone wasn't broken after all, nor did I have any broken bones whatsoever. What I did have, was worse. All the tendons, ligaments, whatever they are called, that hold the collar bone, shoulder blade and shoulder together, were snapped in two. Even after 17 years, it still bothers me, even after spending 6 weeks in a sling (ya shoulda seen me trying to wash milk jars one handed, and the wrong hand, at that! )

You take care of that shoulder, so you don't have the same trouble. You're a lot younger than I was, so you oughtta heal faster and better, but still it's good not to take unnecessary chances with things like that.

When the bus hits a pothole (which is ofen. lol.)it hurts, and i cant lift it-only the elbow down,. I have a cattle show on saturday So I'm going to have to work on it-advil and tylenol do not work-and neither do the ice packs or hot/cold stuff-I just have to bear with it. lol. I got out of fitness testing in gym tho, so there is an up side to it. lol.

ACS, the ER doc told me to take ibuprofen...........about 800 mgs at a time, every 4-6 hours, I believe. Just be sure not to take them on an empty stomach, though, or you'll get really sick. I found that just a slice of bread worked well, without making me feel stuffed all the time.

Is there any way you can tape it up, to help hold it in place? At least for your show.........would sure hate to see you hurt it any more than it already is.

Hope this helps!

I think Ibuprofen is the same as tylenol or advil. I think so anyways. lol.

I just talked to the judge for the show-I might be able to lead my steer from the other side and hold my sgow cane with my right hand... but we'll have to see on saturday. I hope its better or else I will have to go pay a visit to daoc-and i hate having to take drugs... yech. lol

Hi again! Here is some info: Hope it helps you:

What Is a Torn Rotator Cuff?
One or more rotator cuff tendons may become inflamed from overuse, aging, a fall on an outstretched hand, or a collision. Sports requiring repeated overhead arm motion or occupations requiring heavy lifting also place a strain on rotator cuff tendons and muscles. Normally tendons are strong, but a longstanding wearing down process may lead to a tear.

What Are the Signs of a Torn Rotator Cuff?
Typically, a person with a rotator cuff injury feels pain over the deltoid muscle at the top and outer side of the shoulder, especially when the arm is raised or extended out from the side of the body. Motions like those involved in getting dressed can be painful. The shoulder may feel weak, especially when trying to lift the arm into a horizontal position.
A person may also feel or hear a click or pop when the shoulder is moved.

How Is a Torn Rotator Cuff Diagnosed?
Pain or weakness on outward or inward rotation of the arm may indicate a tear in a rotator cuff tendon. The patient also feels pain when lowering the arm to the side after the shoulder is moved backward and the arm is raised. A doctor may detect weakness but may not be able to determine from a physical examination where the tear is located. X rays, if taken, may appear normal. An MRI can help detect a full tendon tear, but does not detect partial tears. If the pain disappears after the doctor injects a small amount of anesthetic into the area, impingement is likely to be present. If there is no response to treatment, the doctor may use an arthrogram, rather than an MRI, to inspect the injured area and confirm the diagnosis.

How is a Torn Rotator Cuff Treated?
Doctors usually recommend that patients with a rotator cuff injury rest the shoulder, apply heat or cold to the sore area, and take medicine to relieve pain and inflammation. Other treatments might be added, such as electrical stimulation of muscles and nerves, ultrasound, or a cortisone injection near the inflamed area of the rotator cuff. The patient may need to wear a sling for a few days. If surgery is not an immediate consideration, exercises are added to the treatment program to build flexibility and strength and restore the shoulder's function. If there is no improvement with these conservative treatments and functional impairment persists, the doctor may perform arthroscopic or open surgical repair of the torn rotator cuff.

Take Care!!

thabnk gosh for little brothers... all i haftas do is feed the show calves (2) a bag and a half of feedrite mix a day, make supper and babysit. lol.ive beebn stretching it everyonce in a while, and i hate not bein able to do nothin. lol

Advil= Ibuprofen. tylenol= acetametiphen (Spelled WAY wrong).

While taking 800 mg instead of the normal dose probably won't do any damage to you IF you need that much there is something wrong and you really should have a doc look at it. If your shoulder was popped back into place by the former doctor it would probably mean you had a dislocation. This would again, probably stretch your tendons around there, hopefullly no significant tears... of course, the only way to know is go see a doctor.

I ran on a bum left knee for a while when I was 14. Did a season of soccer and basketball, decided to do cross country the next falll and developed an odd lop to deal with the pain in tjat knee. In the end it was my right knee that almost blew out and landed me on the bench for 4 months as we tried to fix the problem. I still remember the pain that shot through that leg when it finally got weak enough to completley twist while jumping the creek on our course... a short rehab or even a brace a year earlier would have saved me a world of trouble. Probably would have told me I have bad knees and that cross country wasn't good for them... I would have liked that advice

Sorry, my brother is a ER doc and I get chewed out all the time by him for not going to the doctor faster.. Don't like going but going soner rather than later is generally for the best. His wife is much nicer so I ask the sister in law for medical advice now :D
