Saddletramp and his dad. His dad was a big help Saturday as we ran another bunch of yearling heifers through to give them their new permanent cow number and a year brand.

The little button has the same number as the big tag in the other ear. If the big tag gets lost, the little button tag can be read and a new tag installed at chute-side. We use Ritchey tags and grind in a new number when necessary. Also, we are leaving the heifers' calf tags in place for further reference, if needed.

The buttons are a two piece deal. The front side that you see is actually the "pin" part and it has the number on it. The back part is round with a hole in it, and is about the size of a fifty-cent piece. It fits in a Y-Tex tagger where the tag usually goes. They are a Y-Tex product. The buttons are less likely to come out than a regular tag, so it just gives kind of a back-up system. We've done it this way for several years, and like it better than freeze branding or using a tattoo as a back-up.

Our fair association uses these lil button tags for everything except the Commercial Heifer Division....and for some reason they get a bigger regular tag with the Information on it. I really wish they'd use the back up buttons like that, because they've said if one of them looses thier tag it's a big deal to get them retagged.
We are taggin-in heifers this evenin.....

We have been year branding with the year and then the cows number on the bottom....
And the bulls we put the sire on the shoulder brand so we know the sire, then if we have to look up the cows...
Yours is alot simpler........

Soapweed the RFID tags we use for our M'ID program are the size of those little button tags. The RFID part is a little thicker but it's inside the ear and they suggest to put in closer to the head. If a person was weighing cattle over a chute scale the numbers could be scaned right into a computer or even scanned with a hand held wand ready for down loading.
