Looks to me like you are pretty good with that grinder. What buttons do you use. I use the Ritchie tag and allflex buttons, but seem to shed quite a few.

It was a great day for first calvers! In addition to my first calf, I sorted a few more heavy cows and scourguarded too, so I'd say our day was very similar :D .

I use Ritchey tags too, but am having a little trouble with the backings breaking in two. What backings are you using? I've been using Y-Tex.

I enjoyed your photographs Soapweed, just as I do everytime I look at them...Thanks for sharing your family and your day with us

We use Ritchey tags and Y-Tex buttons. The black colored Y-Tex buttons haven't been very good the past few years. It seems like the colored buttons are stronger for some reason. Of our cows whose numbers start with 2 (born in 2002 and tagged in the fall of 2003), we have lost just about all of the original tags. That year we didn't have a second numbered button tag in the other year, so when they lose their original number we have no way of knowing what it had been. The tag in my hand is a replacement for a cow that has lost her tag since last fall. The 2 means she was born in 2002, and the 8 means we retagged her either in the fall of 2008 or the spring of 2009. The fact that her number is 2840 means that she was the 40th seven year old cow that has lost her ear tag since a year ago. It's kind of disgusting that some manufacturer can't come up with an ear tag that stands the test of time. :?

Soapweed, good luck with your calving season. Busy time ahead, hopefully you won't have too many "major headaches". Is your neck of the woods supposed to see alot of snow out of this incoming storm?

We use Z tags . The tags last a long time but the Z tag ink fades, so we have cows with tags but no number. This year when we branded replacement heifers we used Y tex ink on Z tags. we will see :D if that does the trick.

We tag our replacement heifers when we bangs vaccinate. I keep track of the bangs tag numbers since both them and our eartags are in consecutive order. If we have to retag then I know what her original number was and can track it. We use prenumbered Richey tags and what ever buttons they send with them. We used to use Z-tags but quit since the numbers were unreadable after a couple of years.

Yep- for once the snow is supposed to go south of us- which really doesn't hurt my feelings as I'd like to share a little  and altho our temp is supposed to be a little lower- its nothing really that bad predicted...
