Mommas and babies in boxstalls. The calves born tonight need to go into the barn, as the temperature now registers 12 below zero.

Boy Soap, them's some cute babies. You've got a real nice set so far as I can tell. And do them yearlings look nice! Real nice place, there. Stay warm, and I hope all those babies come out healthy.

Sorry I jinxed you with the snow question yesterday Soapweed. Hope it doesn't cause too much extra work or last too long. your cattle all look like they are having a good winter.

All looking good :D . Those yearlings are turning into fancy heifers. You mentioned you'll be AI'ing them, do you know to which bull yet? Also, do you calve in the barn, or let them calve outside, then bring them inside?

Been chilly here too, but supposed to warm up and be in the 60's next week! :D I hope you get the warm-up too.

I was feeling sorry for you until our thermometer started plunging during the night...16 Below here right now...Suppose to make it to 16 Above today- as the cold moves east and south...
Best thing is the sun is shining bright...At least that old sun has some heat in it now....Yesterday with the temp only hitting about 10 above- the snow on the sidewalks and roads was melting...

It's nice to see that the deal was sealed with a simple handshake....no written contract needed :) I wonder what the "deal" was?

We will probably AI the heifers to a bull that the AI guy owns. The bull has been AIed to quite a few heifers in recent years, with good success. Besides, the price is right.

On these cold nights, we try to get the cow or heifer settled into an 8' x 10' boxstall before they calve. It is easier for the cow to carry her calf into the barn than it is for one of us to carry the calf.

I thought you guys were getting out of winter.Things lookg good. Are peach and sunflower still on remodeling duty?

Peach is the night calver, and it is hard to take pictures of her in the dark. Sunflower is feeding quite a few cattle with the other Hydra-Bed pickup. Since we both go different directions, it is not easy to be in the right place at the right time to take her picture.

Will you trail those hfrs home or get them hauled?

Just think of the money making opportunity you could have with a trail drive and all those paying dudes helping. :D

We will probably haul the heifers home in the spring. I have thought about trailing them, but there are too many unfenced wheat fields to get through up in the area where they are wintering.

I think he was just so proud that she was actually wearing a cap on that cold morning. :kid:

Great pictures again Soapweed..I do have one question tho..Whats the story with the fire wood hanging on the panels in the barn? (the pic with the cow and calf)

One side of the alleyway down the middle of the barn is made with five lodgepole pine rails. It is the ends of those rails that are in the picture. These rails also provide the backside of our calf-pulling facility.
