We been going like a long tailed cat in a room full of rockin' chairs lately. But i have packed my camera a little and thought i'd share a few pics with ya'll. Cut us a Christmas tree ten days ago and had a fun afternoon doing it.
That was back before the snow started stacking up. But since Christmas is just around the corner, here's a few shots of our school Christmas play, grades K through 6th. Little H was the head elf in the production of "surfin' santa". She had lots of lines and remembered them all without a hitch.
Littlest H' had multiple roles as an elf and narrator. Plus he has a fine tenor voice like his dad.
He also played the part of elf on vacation somewhere warm. Thus the tourist lookin' outfit. If i ever go someplace warm, i hope i do not have dress simularly.
The real santa showed up and brought all the actors and actresses a present. Little H' got brand new fancy warm boots and was happy. I think she's about as cute as a bugs ear!
Today, we took a ride to check on feed and snow depth and cattle condition. We have had several beautiful storms that have really stacked up on the mountain. Had about 8 inches or so here as we gained altitude.
Saw a lot of sign and about a quarter of the cows. All were in fine flesh and there is still quite a bit of feed. Sure was a nice day for a ride. Started out chilly but got into the 30's F by afternoon.
Lots of little hidey-holes in those draws and cedars for cattle to disappear into. Someplaces ya about have to ride right up to a cow to see her. Snow with tracks helps a bunch too.
Found where they'd been bedding to get out of the flurries. They had a good scatter on them looking for groceries.
We found 16 in a bunch on a south facing slope. I remembered to take a far away shot but forgot the closeup. Must be slipping a few gears.
There is still a lot of native grass and plenty of browse. Cows we saw were full, laying around chewing thier cud or just grazing. Good hard grass with decent nutrition in it. Beats feeding $200 hay.
We did find 12 head that had decided to head south on thier own. Trapped them and loaded them in the stock trailers for a ride to town. The 12 included one 2nd calf heifer with a big slick eared calf on her side. She lost her calf and musta bred back on her calving heat. Guess a calf is good regardless of when it comes. Forgot to take pictures again!
I been building a shed for my heifer pen and have the roof on and part of the back up. Try to finish the back and sides tomorrow.
Front veiw. Got the posts in before the ground froze. Got the roof on and started on the slab back and sides. My heifers have given me thier approval and thats what counts.
Here are the heifers. The two on the left are my replacement heifers. The one on the right is a dogie we are gonna fatten up and eat next summer. I set my stackyard up so i can feed out's 3 sides. It pays to be lazy sometimes. They are doing great on tri-blend (triticale, oats and beardless barley) plus some grass/alfalfa hay.
Got my little bunch home. It was a dry, tough year and they came off the mountain 2 full months early. They would usually still be on a meadow i lease but they ran out'a feed there too. So there they stand.
"Gus" the dog. He was supposed to be an Australian/hanging tree cross. He turned out to have a hole bunch of lab in him and a little cowdog. The kids love him and he is a pretty good dog. Glad he didnt cost much though.
Sunset tonight was pretty but the wind has kicked up as we get another storm headed our way. Was a good, productive day anyway, and i enjoyed being alive.
Hope ya enjoyed tagging along on an always adventurous and seldom boring desert esapade. Have a fine evening and from the Leanin' H Outfit...... MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
