Some folks out my way had a Shar-Pi dog that would hunt coyotes..all by herself..She weighed 'bout 45lb.. They'd find signs of a big fight,2-3 dead coyotes..she'd might have a nick on her hip...For those of you that don't know,the Shar-Pi is a fighting dog from Japan.The oversize skin is so they can turn around,even tho something has them by the neck,and kill it..Mabe y'll need a Shar-Pi or two to take care of the problem..

I think where you get big problems with predators is in areas where the predators are 100% protected. They lose all fear of man.
There are tons of cases in our national parks that most of the public is not aware of because they dont want to scare off the tourists.
Personally I would rather have coyottes than gophers. Not all coyottes are a problem.
With wolves, well I like wolves in a way. But honestly I like Elk better than wolves and it takes a lot of elk to feed a wolf pack.
Most cougars are actually shot in peoples barns. Well thats how it seems around here. I like cougars but I have no trouble shooting a nuicense one. Im sure not against hunting any predator.
We have lots of bears around here. Like all predators I can shoot bears legaly the year round if I want. The exception are grizzlys.
I have only shot one bear and I dont plan on shooting anymore unless there is a reason to. They are kind of a curse though in a way. Im always scared im going to come face to face with one by accident on a colt. Probable im scared of nothing though because I have watched small bands of elk chase bears away lots of times.
Thing of it is though, anybody who claims to know what a bear will do next, knows more than what the bear knows.
The more time I spend around bears the more I respect them. They are faster thanm any horse in rough country, steep side slopes or for the first hundred yards anywhere. You would just have to witness it to believe it.

Wrong you have the majority of problems when densitys get to high in a given pieace of habitat and durring pup rearing time. Prey base, weather, and predator densitys all make up the amount of livestock depredation one will have in a given area. Also the more remots the livestock are ranged or wintered will play into losses as well.

What got me out of it was when they outlawed foot hold traps<if your a commercial trapper selling at auction they now have to be snaired>.
I went out and bought snares, but I had to much trouble with deer. I trapped three fawns <yearling mulies>in one week. If you set them to be fawn proof I couldnt catch coyottes with them either so I quit. See with the old style<no teeth> foot hold traps if a deer steped in one they could easily pull their foot out with no damage. There was nothing wrong with the old leg hold traps. The snairs are just a destructive menace.

I don't think foothold traps are outlawed in CA they just have went through extensive testing to see what traps pass your BMP protocol for CA and there are foot traps that can and will be used on coyotes in CA.

Snares are a great tool for controlling coyotes and you must use them in areas to avoid NOn targets!!! Break away devices help with any foot caught deer and they will break out and be gone. Snares when used properly are a great tool and it is your inexperiance and set selection that caused you problems. Snares are not menace at all!!!! Snare technology has come along ways in the last 15 years. There is a guy in Alberta that snares 400+ coyotes a winter his name is Marty Senneker. You must leanr not to set big fence crawl unders where ungulates will travel and you can use them on trails and with break aways and shear pin style locks the high majority of deer will break out and non the worse for wear. Using smaller cable also is a benefit as the ends can strip off and again the deer can walk away.

Snares are much less maintance in the winter and durring really wet times of the year and from Jan _march can out do a foothold trap any day of the week. I don't like it when people with limited knowledge of something condem it as worthless when there actual use in the field is so limited as yours. Get a good updated snare book and "read" it you will see snaring has come along ways.

Isn't that the truth Greg-I can't imagine going to the RM office here and asking them to send out a helicopter to shoot coyotes. You'd get a 'You have a gun go shoot them yourself.' and rightly so-better things to spend tax money on-like schools etc.

Trouble in the US is that if you protect yourself and your stock, you are a criminal. Wolves are valued above ranchers. If we could shoot, we could keep them at bay also.

Northern Rancher.... ranchers here pay a special tax so we can call the helicopter for predator control. So schools and etc. or not getting shorted from the use of money.

I read your post and though I do not care for horses I'm so damned mad right now I could kill all the wolves in the US.

Please just shoot any wolf you see if you can get away with it. Carry a good, reliable, quiet rifle at all times on your dash. And kill these things. Laws that endanger us or our stock and don't make any damned sense aren't worth obeying.

Plus, if you get caught, come on here and we'll help with your legal defense. We have coyotes and wild pack hunting dogs here, but no wolves. I will shoot a coyote or dog on my place, your place, or in the middle of the bighway if it's close to my place. I work too hard protecting and trying to raise up my stock to have it be threatened by somebody else's stupidity.

These wolves should be hunted down and shot. Same with the folks forcing these threats to our stock and families on us.

What would we do if someone was throwing rattlesnakes into our yard with our family there? That's what people pushing these wolves on us are doing.

There are some stupid states where it is even against the law to kill a rattlesnake.
