Here are photographs of our tapered alleyway, which seems to work on all sizes of cattle with no adjustment necessary. We built this last summer,
and used it quite often this fall. These photos were originally posted here on May 31, 2012, with more being added on June 1st.

The Kosmo Kid and I have been working on building a crowding alley.

We are gaining.

Pretty much completed. We plan to put a squeeze chute on the front and try it out tomorrow.

It replaces an old wooden plank alley

That has worked very well

For the past fifty years. I used to help our neighbor work cattle through this alley many years ago. We bought the ranch in 1986,
and saw no need to change the alley system until now, when it finally wore out.

This one has gates at the back, which the old system didn't have. The heavy steel part is 28 feet long plus the four-foot gates,
whcih makes the total alley 32 feet long. This is the same length as the old wooden alley. Hope it works as well as the old one did.

About ready to give it a try

The windmill is watching to see if we do it right.

And to think H wouldn't even wear one of those hats on a New Years cattle drive. :?

And yet, both of these non-conformist individuals are still pretty good guys. :-)

Kosmo has class and style and an independent personality that fits his choices of head gear. I am just kinda dumb.

No, Leanin' H, you have pride in your appearance and want to represent the cowboy trade in the best possible way. :-)

Quite a few years ago, two ranches south of Gordon were sharing a semi to take cull cows to a packing house. One of the ranches was west of the highway and the other was east of the highway, and the corrals where the cows were to be loaded was right by the road. It was full blown winter time with sub-zero temperatures, snow in the air, and a howling wind. The two cowboys driving their bunch in from the east decided to show the other cowhands how tough they were. They were both wearing felt hats but did have big parkas with fur collars, and mittens for their hands, with gloves along also. About a half mile from the corral was a windmill. They ditched their big coats and mittens under the windmill, and came driving in ther bunch of cows wearing only denim jackets, hats, and gloves. Hopefully the other hands were impressed, because the irony of the whole deal turned out to be a truck that was over an hour late.

With all the satellites up in the air anymore, a guy almost hesitates to step out of the pickup to answer nature's call. :?
