Showing their better side. These two old gentlemen have both been my heros growing up. The one on the left is my dad, and the one on the right is a man my father met while both were attending school at Curtis, Nebraska. In 1947, after just turning 24 years of age, the man on the right rode horseback and led a pack horse from Ellsworth, Nebraska to Arizona. He crossed the Grand Canyon on November 8th, 1947 with his own horses. Fifty years to the day later, he rode down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon again, with my wife and me and our three kids. This time he rode a mule, as did we. It was a great experience for all of us.

I have learned a lot from both of these guys through the years, and have always been impressed with their abilities and strength of character. I am still impressed with both of them, because they look on the bright side of life. They just regard older age as another of life's challenges where it takes enthusiasm and perseverence to survive.

Your cows look really slick and shiny, Soapweed, even tho they have put in a long, hot summer. Are you sorting off the calves to take to the sale ring already?

Neat story about the cute ole' fellow.

They have weighed some calves here when they gave preconditioning shots and found they are a little lighter than
normal, but not much. The dry, hot summer probably had a little something to do with the weights.

One of the order buyers from South Dakota maintains that
heat is harder on calves than anything. I think being short of water is
harder on them. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how calves weigh up.

We are just pre-conditioning the calves now. They will go back with their mothers for three or four weeks before we sell them. They look lighter than usual, and I am guessing the very hot dry summer has something to do with this.
