Most people don't think about gates coming open when they are hauling cattle, but it happens every day somewhere. We put a lock and sometimes even a chain around the door post when we haul them. Have seen it go south way too many times.

The article discusses essential safety practices for managing cattle during transportation and events. It highlights the challenges and lessons from incidents involving escaped livestock, emphasizing the importance of securing trailer gates with chains and locks, using proper confinement structures, and preparing for unexpected scenarios. Recommendations include carrying a rope, ensuring vehicle safety checks, and avoiding unnecessary trailer door openings during travel. The goal is to prevent escapes and potential harm to the animals or public.

Amazing the cops have that one tied down. A lot of cops would just shoot it. And here where it is all open range they would just leave it alone.
Yeah, We had a guy buy a cow from us. His first cow. He borrowed a 2 horse trailer from his neighbor and drove from South Carolina to Ohio to pick up the cow. He called us in a panic somewhere in North Carolina saying he stopped to water the cow and when he opened the door to put water in, the cow jumped out and ran off. He was at a rest stop on the interstate.

The cops showed up and shot the cow to keep her from running into traffic.

Guy didn't realize that the cow would be fine without water for 6-8 hours.

I think the cow in the above photo was in a rural area where some of the cops were likely ropers. Not often that the police have a lasso in their car and know how to use it.

I just ran to the post office. It is 5 miles to there. I saw cows standing beside the road in 3 different places. About a dozen cows total. Like I said here the cops here would just drive by them like everyone else. Now the interstate is a different deal. One gets on there and everyone drops what they are doing to get her off the highway before someone hits her. You would think with cops and DOT with flashing lights. Ranchers with their four way flashers on. People running up the shoulder of the highway. That people would slow down. But they don't. 70-75 MPH. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

Friends lost a steer they were taking to be butchered. Someone left a gate open in the pens and the steer got away. He went through some streets in town and wound up along the railroad track. There was someone there that was horseback so they were able to get him corralled again. It took some doing. Some of those that lived in the houses weren't too happy. Made a good story, though.

In Colorado Springs about 5 years ago, they were having a Texas Longhorn trail drive/parade downtown to promote the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. They had a cow jump the barrier and run down the sidewalk. She ran into the door of a bank. The cowboys roped her and drug her out. Made the national news.
