The Killer Cat
His nose was cold, his toes were cold
And his body was colder than hell
He's a goner, cause he's out there in Donner,
The pass that is known so well
For its winter snows and wind that blows
And frost that covers the ground
If he could die in a warmer place
He was sure he would rather drown
He came up here after that killer cat
That had been getting his sheep down below
He figured he'd lost about 49 head
In the last two weeks or so
He thought," I'll make that critter pay
With his life, for those sheep of mine"
But now it looks like on his frozen carcass
That killer cat will dine
He heard it scream up on the ridge
Just below the snow
He figured he knew right where it was
So up he decided to go
He knew it could hear him coming
And was laying there in wait
But the one thing he hadn't counted on
Was that damn critters mate
She jumped down from the limb of a tree
And landed on his back
She could have killed him, then and there
If it hadn't been for his pack
She clawed and bit and tore him up
And was bringing lots of blood
He knew his life was pouring out
In that sticky crimson flood
He fought her off and held her at bay
For the few seconds that he needed
To remember the warnings that he'd received
But stupidly hadn't heeded
He'd been told that he would die
In the cold and all alone
Now there he set, bleeding to death
And his body chilled to the bone
He could feel himself slipping away
And he know he'd never feel
The crushing jaws of that cat
When his fate she comes to seal
He could see her eyes from over there
Looking back at him
Full of hate for all mankind
His chances were very slim
As consciousness begin to fade
His inner thoughts went soaring
To lots of things he'd left undone
And it sent his mind to roaring
"I don't want to die, here, right now
And become this cats meal
I feel in this game of life
I should get another deal"
She comes in a rush, moving fast
And he knows he will never make it
But this thought has brought inner peace
"Here's my life - - - come take it"
