hi yall we had a lyceum at school the other day and they brought up a porcupine and that was the first one i have seen. And dad said ask some of you guys out there to see what you think of them and them porcupines must be hard on the cows and hores i think well talk to you later and tell me what you think of them.
 
sorry i did not mean hores i meant horses sorry about that but please tell me what you think of the little critters
 
OHHHHH they're little boogers with horses and cattle and dogs. Get the quills in the animals can be a HUGE pain to get out,esp in a young horse. But ya they are kinda cute :wink:
 
yea the guy that brought up the porcupine said if you get one in you, you got 30 sec to get the guils out befor they swell up and he also said it is better to push the quils through if you broke it off or missed one and he took a quil and put it under a micracope i dont think that is spelled right but anyway he magnitized it 400 times and showed it to us and it looked like a pine cone. and yea they are cute :wink:
 
A real pain, but cute.
Had a calf get a chin full of quills a few years ago, she never fully recovered.
Had our 3 horses get into it with one. Possibly a momma and a baby. vet sedated them and pulled quills out of 2 horses. Thought the third one was smarter. Vet was able to pull the quills without the sedation on the 3rd horse.

They will avoid you if they can.

They are trouble around cattle and stock. Plus they love to eat up your saddle bags and saddle on account of the salt from the sweat from your horse. They kinda waddle along and talk to themselves in a little chuckle.
 
Taste good if eaten in the fall of the year - always chewing on things they shouldn't be - cause dogs and stock some grief - slow waddling critter

Do a search here with porcupine in it and you'll see pictures several people have posted of critters with quills in them.

They can be really hard trees too...eat the bark, and/or the tops out of little pine trees.

sorry leanin H i did not mean to spell hores. but i bet they are trouble around cattle and stock. and they eat the saddle bags and saddle because they want the salt. It is really funny to listen to them little criters
 
are they really good eaten never had one got a friend that shot one up North and ate it he said it was pretty good. we got the same problem here but not with porcupines we got trouble with coon i have been traping them and know i am trying to find a place to sell the furs for a little cash and them things are in the feed and messing everything up.
 
Mn I'm in Montana. I set out a live trap for coons. Never use cat food I catch our barn cats a lot that way. I just roll the trap around with the barn cat inside and after a couple of trips rolling down a hill they stay out. :lol:
I use eggs, but I also get skunks too. Shoot them with a .22
 
yea i never use cat food i use eggs and marshmellows for bait. and i set my live traps on saterday morning and i caught our little farm cat so i let her out and she ran right into the other trap so i fixed her i rattled that trap i little bit and she nevered did that again. and i have shot at least 3 coon but i got to find somewhere to sell the fur for a little cash. if i catch one i go back to the house and get the gun a .22 i am a pretty good shot for my age. talk to you later got to go check my traps.
 
I have a pic posted of one our cows with her udder full of quills. OUCH! We call them porky pigs, they stink to high heaven and I can smell if they've been in the cake truck eating cake and the wiring :mad: :mad: they've eaten wiring on our pivots, kill trees by eating the bark off them. I don't like porky pigs :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:
