Preconditioning Yard Cost

I am trying to convince some neighbors to pool our calves into load lots to sell. I have been preconditioning my own calves so I have the facilities to do all the calves. Neighbors will bring in calves straight from cows and I will wean, vaccinate and feed calves for around 45 to 60 days.

Last year my calves gained nearly 2.0 lbs per day with a cost of gain around 40 cents a lb. I will know the vaccine cost and any treatment cost for each calf.

What is a fair way to charge for this service?

Two ways......

One is Feed Markup and the other is yardage.....

How much feed markup guys charge tends to depend upon yardage.

What kinda starter ration do you use? Look at some cocci control, mineral pack and rumen microbe help. Your friends cattle may not come into this in as good of shape as yours....

My first month calves tend to cost sixty cents per pound because of this start....I see yardage generally around $.23 per day here, adds maybe 12 cents to the cost of gain in your deal...

My feed consists of Ryegrass balage, waste cereal and cotton seed meal. It has a vit. mineral pack with ruminson. Formulated to run 14% protein and 68 % TDN.

Calves really take to it well.
