Flyers' Boulerice ripped for hit; Wings' Babcock, Downey criticize ex-local

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock didn't waste words with his reaction to the hit Philadelphia's Jesse Boulerice made Wednesday night on Vancouver's Ryan Kesler.
"No room in hockey (for that)," Babcock said of Boulerice's cheap shot, which came in the third period with the Flyers up, 7-2.
Boulerice received a match penalty for cross-checking Kesler in the head.
Kesler is a Livonia native who played one season with the Ann Arbor-based U.S. National Team Development Program before Vancouver selected him 23rd overall in the 2003 draft.
Boulerice played three seasons of junior hockey in metro Detroit with the Whalers from 1995-96 to 1997-98.
Wings forward Aaron Downey, who has fought Boulerice in the NHL, agreed with Babcock that Boulerice's actions weren't warranted.
"That's just absolutely stupid," Downey said.
One of the most memorable fights of Downey's career came against Boulerice a few seasons ago, when Downey played for the Dallas Stars. The video of the fight can still be seen on youtube.com.
Boulerice took a swing and missed, and Downey responded with a punch that dropped Boulerice to the ice.
"I'd fought him the year before, and he did the exact same thing," Downey said. "He comes in with that flying right. I knew it was coming. I said to myself, 'Watch out for that flying right.' Sure enough, I just went into the zone, seen it coming and just got a lucky counter."
Downey didn't want to pile onto Boulerice, who was contrite after Wednesday night's game.
"It's a good thing Kesler wasn't hurt," Downey said. "At the end of the day, we don't need that in the game. Jesse knows better.
"Everybody tries to play fair, play within the boundaries. He just kind of lost his marbles for a minute."
Downey said Boulerice has "a history of that, dating back to the OHL. He was kicked out."
