I am baling with a 7400 Deere tractor and a 535 baler. A riddle has made itself present in the last couple of days. (of course, it was the weekend!) The gate cylinder on right hand side of the baler keeps creeping up, effectively unlocking the latch on the gate. I had a spare cylinder on hand and changed it thinking that the packing was gone in the other one, still creeping. Could the packing be gone in the left cylinder and cause this problem? Could it be the compression valve? at the front of the baler or is this a tractor problem?
I made 120 bales over the weekend by activating the hydralic lever every 10 seconds or so to keep it from unlatching- pain in the butt. It will come up far enough to unlatch in about 30 seconds.
Calling the service manager at the dealer's this morning but wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

If I had to guess I would say the problem is in your tractor. Maybe the outlet is letting oil out but I'm not sure why both cylinders aren't being affected.
 
Hmmmm ... correct me if I'm wrong but if one cyl leaks internally, the other cyl won't hold either because they are hooked together. Might be the tractor control too.

How about trying this? Close the gate and before you start out baling again disconnect the hoses from the tractor remote. Start out baling. If one or both of the cylinders are leaking internally it will do the same thing and the chamber will open.

If the gate stays closed then the problem is on the tractor side. Of course you're gonna hafta get out, clean the connections, and hook the hoses back up to unload your bale! :oops: :wink:
 
I agree with John. run it unhooked to isolate it. I was always from the school of thought that if you fix one side, fix the other...they will go out roughly close to the same time.
 
The easiest way to eliminate the tractor is to reverse the hoses as Frank said - - -- if this corrects the problem then you need to repair the valve body on the tractor.

If there is no change it means the problem in in the baler and you can eliminate it the same way - - - -try changing the other cylinder and if that does not fix it then your check valve is bad. It could have a piece of junk in it from hooking up dirty tips and they can be disassembled and cleaned.

Most problems like this are easier to fix than to find. Let us know how you make out.
 
I have wrapped a lot of bales with an outfit just like that. Some good advice here but the only time I have ever had trouble with the tail gate popping open is when there was a buildup of material and it wasn't letting the end gate latch close completely. Or possibly some adjustment on the shims of the gate latch needs done so that the latch closes fully.

I have changed a cylinder before, now I can't remember which side.
The left one is the "lead"-- the oil reaches it first, service manager says if the packing is damaged in it, it will cause the right to creep. Going to try the cylinder I took off on the left today, only have a few bales to do, more tommorow. If creeping still happening I'll put the baler behind the 6410 and see if that solves the creeping problem. Then I'll know if it's the tractor.
