question on bio security

just a question on biosecurity. In Iowa we are known for hogs and Ive worked in every segment there is from a boar stud to manageing a nursey and a guilt grow out. Biosecuity in the pork industry is very important. every job I have has required me to shower in and out of the buildings. when at the boar stud we had a isolation building that all boars had to go to and be there for 30 days and two blood test were taken to make sure they were not prrs positive. The stud would even wash my truck after i went to a sale barn. Ive tried to incorpate this in to my operation Isolating new cows from the general population if possiable I didn;t know if any body else ever tried this, and what some of your ideas were.

Down here some of the higher end breeders would always isolate a new animal from the herd, administer a full array of vacciantions and deworming and then allow it into the general herd population after a few days. This would include any new bulls as well.

Anytime my bull got out or a neighbors bull got in, vaccinations for trich followed. Some folks might sell off a great looking cow that didn't breed back not realizing it was due to something they could have managed.

This subject could tie-in very well with the basics that FH mentioned in another post ("A cow has to do three things. She has to have a calf,
save it, and breed back. Those that don't, go to town.")!
