R-Calf Cattle Update: House Effort to Protect Domestic Beef Gains Momentum

(Billings, Mont.) – Eighty-two cattle, farm, and consumer groups joined together to send a clear message to the U.S. House of Representatives when the groups this week issued a joint letter to lawmakers urging support for House Joint Resolution 23, which rejects the United State Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) efforts to establish beef trade with countries affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The resolution was jointly introduced by U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth, D-S.D., and U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo.

"Both of these Congresswomen have long been good friends of the U.S. cattle industry, and we want to publicly acknowledge their efforts to ensure the continued health of the U.S. cattle herd and the safety of U.S. beef," said Jess Peterson, R-CALF USA Director of Governmental Relations. "The number of co-sponsors signing onto this resolution continues to grow as we to build momentum toward a House floor sometime after the spring recess."

"We want to encourage Americans that are concerned about this issue to request meetings with their appropriate representatives during the upcoming recess to explain to them why it's so important to become a co-sponsor H. J. Res. 23," Peterson said. "The Senate expressed its opposition to USDA's efforts on March 3rd . The House should send the same strong message."
