We lucked out on this deal. We only got an additional 1 1/2 inches yesterday. Neighboring town 20 miles away got 14 inches......this was overnight and into the afternoon rain. Another town a lil bit south of there, got 11 inches in 46 minutes. :shock:
 
Right now I hope it comes here as we just put litter on ALL the pasture....... :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: Whew.....it's ripe smellin' around here right now!!!


And....planted a 1/2 garden yesterday.


Guess this mean "naked" barn runs must start today!!!! :wink: :wink:
 
GEEEZZZE,we had ANOTHER fire in our area yesterday.We NEED rain BAD!!!!!!!! Heck I'll even take a spring blizzard :shock:
 
LOL @ ripe smellin.....ain't that the most awful smell???? When we have ours done, I usually forget about it, then drive past the hay field...and gag. I can stand lots of smells....but that one gets me. I don't know why.....
 
There aint much nastier than a chicken,smellin or lookin........been gettin a lil rain around here for a change,gettin some showers now,kinda nice to see it too wet to do much out doors.................good luck
 
Wow..11" of rain..that's alot! Good thing you didn't get that much or you'd be giving swimming lessons to yur cows! We've had threats of rain,,but so far nothing, which makes hubby happy for the moment since he's trying to get the pivots planted...
 
We have got about 8-10 inch over the last few weeks. Now we can't see the cows because of the grass. :lol: Well is not that bad, but that would be a nice dream going into the summer. :wink: I will try to get some picture today if the old horse can stand still long enough. :)
 
We had a little shower on tuesday, but last night and this morning got a dandy rain along with some snow :D :D :D Boy did we need it! Of course our 'dandy rain' was probably 1/2" or so...not quite like Texas :wink:

Really couldn't have come at a better time for both the range grasses and the crops. Not to mention the pasture we just overgrazed waiting to get the cows to Thief Valley (our leased rangeground). We desperately try not to overgraze but first we had to wait for the creek to go down so the calves can cross, then had to wait for people to be able to help. We're going tomorrow. With this rain the pasture will come back just fine.
 
Been raining since last night here,at a pretty good pour.Suppose to rain and possible snow in the high elevations for next two or three days :) We really need this moisture. 8)

There's a way around the chicken litter smell...........

Pile it up away from the house a year in advance (before spreading) and compost it. That way the weeds do not grow from it (the internal heat kills the seeds), it is much better fertilizer, and the smell is minimized to the area where composting.

Of course you'll need to turn it 4-5 times while it's in a pile with a front end loader but that doesn't take long.

Plus.......... the composting process eliminates at least half of the total volume of the fresh litter so that only about half as much needs to put down per acre.

Composted chicken litter has an abundance of bacteria that plants love.
 
They do pile some of it up. But most times folks are demandin it, almost as soon as it's taken outta the houses. The uncle here that has houses, also has several spreader trucks. He cleans out nearly all the Sanderson Farms Chicken houses in the Brazos Valley area, and spreads litter on the folks signed up to recieve it. They have a down time of about six weeks, when there's no chickens in the houses. So it's pretty much....haul it outta the houses into the trucks and off to the hay fields.

Their downtime usually starts the middle of Novemeber and goes thru until the first of january. We usually have our fields spread at that time. We've done it once in the spring, and it burnt the hay field real bad.

Can't pass up free fertilizer....no matter how bad it smells LOL

Which brings up a good point,if you stockpile it at the ranch,you need a spreader,more cost,sounds like the way Lilly gets it,they bring it in a spreader truck,dont get me wrong,sure would like to have a manure spreader here,compost lots of waste over the winter,lots of work using a tractor loader and not near as good.

Here there are houses just across the road.

They just load it up, straight outta the houses, and drive across the 2 lane into my entrance and away we go!!!

All I have to pay is for fuel!!!

Can't beat that deal!!
 
Another good thing about chicken houses/litter is that it scares the be-jeebers outta city folk and they don't DARE move anywhere near!!! :wink: :wink: :wink:

Yall have it made with that chicken litter,I havent priced fertilizer this year but I suspect somewhere around 3 hunert a ton,got any idea what you pay per ton for the chicken litter and what the nitrogen is ?

Ankony priced 'real' fertilizer and it was $450/ton then, prob higher now.


I'm not sure how many tons per spreader truck as the boys had it piled as high as it could go since they didn't have to travel but just across the 2 lane to me so I can't answer that.

I had them spread it kinda thin.

The broiler houses are not completely cleaned out but about every 6 months now, so it's pretty broken down by the time we get it.

Yrs ago the houses were cleaned out with each batch of chickens--about every 6 wks. and that was when you got some real ' chicken chunx'!!! :shock: :shock:
