Ranch Names

Over Thanksgiving while watching the little nieces and nephews and grandkids running around we got to thinking about how names are selected that one has to carry a lifetime. I got to wondering how and why you named your ranches the way you did. Any good names or reasons out there?
 
We have never named this place.. At one point we joked that we would name it Dead Possum Hollow as when we moved in there were dead possums everywhere and our one dog kept finding them and bringing them to us as her trophy du jour... Pain in the butt dog.. Now that she is 10 she is not quite as prolific at finding dead things, I think it is because she doesn't move as fast anymore.

We don't do registerd stock but if we did it would have to be Sand Prairie or something like that as we have tons of sand prairie around here and Sandhills for that matter.
 
I picked "Changing Strides" because the off the track horses become riding horses thus we Change their stride...
 
many of the ranches around here are named for their locale or their brand or even the family name
Cedar Creek Ranch
O'Dell Creek Ranch :wink:
Finman Mountain Ranch (locale and family name)
Jack Creek Ranch
Longhorn Ranch (what they raise)
Bear Creek
Alton Ranch (family name)
Jumpin' Horse (dude ranch)
Flying J (their brand)
Rice Ranches
Sitz Ranches (family name)
Diamond J (brand)
 
Most in this area that have a name are incorporated or have a purebred herd name. My grandfather picked the brand Circle Y and that has become our ranch name.


In the area are: Twin Creeks, Lakeveiw, Big Muddy Cattle Co.
West of us are Six Mile Red Angus and Peak Dot ranch, Sandy Bar Angus.

Wheres Six Mile Red Angus? A few years back a couple of my neighbors attended that sale and bought some bulls- which apparently had a pretty good party after the sale- because somehow they got sidetracked and didn't make it back for a couple of days...Had a hard time explaining to their wives why it took 3 days to attend a 1 day sale that was supposed to be just north of the border.... :roll:

The bulls they bought were really nice bulls tho.....

Six Mile is straight south of Fir Mountain . Almost directly west of Peak Dot.

a good thing the Sitz family doesn't have hot mineral springs on their ranch or they've named it the Sitzbaths.

when I was first married, we lived on this little 13 acre place and a neighbor owned the 800 acres around it. the wife thought we ought to name our place, so we called it the Red Ink Ranch. banker found no humor in it.

place we live on now we dubbed Jigs Creek Cattle Company. guy we bought it from was nicknamed jigs, so it seemed fitting. yup, there is a creek here too.....
 
8) Good questiion-never been asked, but-. My humble ranch is (named I guess)3 Diamond Bar Ranch.Was first picked when I was a pup and still easily inspired.Three Diamonds in my life.Wife-Mairi,Son Dustin,Daughter Lacey.Still goin but only because of my fathers brand-Bar I K
 
When we started ranching we were very hard up. We worked 2 jobs each in Nevada. We needed a brand ;and a name to do buisness as, so we came up with El Rancho En Debto the brand is the -$. In 1994 we moved the hole ranch to Texas my home state.The name and the brand is now registered in 2 states. We are still in debt but still digging our way out. We started raising reg. Black Angus 2 years ago and pressing on and upward. We started with nothing and we still have most of it.
 
I named ours G3 Charolais since I am the third George in the family, and raise registered charolais.
Ill rancher thats funny about the possums, around here some of the old timers call this possum valley.

ameog got sprayd by a skunk about a day after e got her too. Wife picked her up at the Gallatin Valley shelter, next day she went to work and I opned the door and dog ran away... Found her a week later and she was all hunched up to the point she looked like she had a hump (She was a formely beaten dog) and smelled like a skunk so we called her the skunky hump... Trying to figure out how I would do that in a brand :wink: Can still picture the sign my wife made for Dead Possum Hollow lol.
 
Our school district is named after Braeval Farm in Scotland which has been in our family for centuries-I think it actually is the longest owned farm by one family in the British Isles-anyway my ranch name is Braeval Ranching-91 years in the family so far-not all as ranchers mind you-we were more a mixed outfit till I took over. Our fledgling rodeo deal is North Country Rodeo.

Was not to fancy when we started hence the name "TumbleDown".

Vickey's paper was a Catch All for Agricultural hence "CatchPen" then Vickey became V_Key and her ads read:
