Killed my first rattlesnake of the season checking pairs yesterday.
Spring must be getting closer since it is still March.
Everyone pay attention and be careful if you are in snake country.
Don't want to hear of anyone or any baby calves getting bit.

Be careful with Rattlers! But also be careful about telling folks you killed one as they are a protected species and it is illegal to kill one. Atleast out this way. I don't agree with the rule myself.

I had no idea rattlers are protected anywhere. I'm in southern South
Dakota. Wonder what the reason for protecting them.

you have to be kiddin' :? well, if thats the case, i promise to never kill another one :lol2:

Done some googlin......so far the only rattlesnakes I can find that ARE on the endangered list is the Timber Rattler and Eastern Diamondback rattler.

Western Diamondback is NOT endangered......haha or at least it's not on the list.

Grizz tracks on the road just below home yesterday. That is nearly a month earlier than I have ever seen them out up here on the hill.

Ducks were here a week ago dabbling in the runoff puddles.

I hope they know something I don't.

Doesn't look like there's a shortage of snakes in west Texas does it?

You know...the last time we went to the roundup.....they had I think 8 pits with snakes in them. The pits are probably 30 ft across or so. That's just lots of snakes...and people keep bringin em in they whole time durin the roundup.

First of all Lilly..I didn't need to see that picture at this time of nite...probably have nitemares...lol And second..what in the heck to they do at a snake roundup????

They round them up...and milk the venom out to be used to make anti venom. They cook some of them... Not somethin I recommend trying...I did....and soon spit it out. They said it tastes like chicken....they lied.

Then I think the others are killed and skinned. Skins used for whatever ya wanna do with a snake skin. Maybe somewhere there's a market for snake meat...I have no idea on that.

Probably wasn't "well done", huh?

Somebody will fry up one at a huntin camp around here some time. The last time I was in mexico dove huntin we kilt one and they fried it up. If there were no chickins, it would be a good substute. Its not bad at all. But I'll go out of my way to kill one but not to eat.
