Recon day

I spent the day mounted astride a four wheeler checking country for wayward bovine pairs and a few heifers. Ended up going up six canyons and found one bull and 6 pairs and three cows that were either dry or a heifer. Will go back tomorrow with horses and corral them and haul them to my cousins place in Delta. 'Twas a fine day. A might cool as it never got above 30F. But I enjoyed every minute. Some scenery pictures of my travels. Pictures are of either Pole, Ott's, Joe's, Burn, Sheeprock or Cottonwood canyons. I'm too tired to label them for ya. But it was a banner desert day!

This is what my Dad loved to do every fall. After he got where he didn't ride with us in the horses, he loved taking a wheeler and doing scouting for us. Today was a tender day.

And found one little "Puddy Tat" track up Sheeprock. About the size of my hand. Good sized puma.

They are useless for moving cows out there. But they make sense scouting for cattle in a lot of places. I probably put thirty miles on the old green Honda today.

Not on a 60% grade covered with shale. I've had one roll over me twice. I sincerely hope it never happens again. I'm out of collar bones and shoulder blades.

Are those trails wide enough for a side x side? It looks like fun country to ride in regardless of what is taking you through it.

our old ranch was the same except for the hay meadows, mountains were too steep and timber too thick. Here the ponderosa pretty open, and the skid trails thru it. The only problems are the steep creek banks in places. Usually once we get started the cows ttring out and move pretty good. This time of year we can move them with a cake feeder or bale of hay.

Got 47 home today. Rode up to Muddy and got the two pair I found yesterday.

Then we got together and knocked some cows off the ridges into the bottom. A good day. The pictures of the low country is doable easily with a wheeler. But where we brought them from is not.

Took a picture of "Turkey Rock" on my way home. Was a good day. Hope we get another half a hundred tomorrow

I know places like that! Have ridden them and glad to have a sure-footed horse when in a place where you COULD ride.

Our country is deceiving from just pictures. Lots of ledges and shale and granite and thick cedar and mahogany trees. Even the high Sage basins are steeper than hell. We use ATVs a bunch to check gates and water, as the roads in the bottom of the canyons are good trails. But gathering cattle, it's simply impossible to do anything when the cattle are up on the ridges and peaks.

I went out today after it stormed all night at the house, fully expecting a muddy mess. Was surprised the storm had skirted the ranch. They loaded the 17 we had in the corral and headed home. I made a little scout on the wheeler and found the last bull. Took a couple pictures. I'm partial to the desert of course, but she sure was pretty even on a cold, overcast day.

Otts canyon on the school section. Looking at Ott mountain.

Looking west toward the Sheeprock flats. Over 8500 feet and hard to get to unless you happen to have 5 generations of folks who know the trails.

Looking down into Spring canyon. It's almost straight down to those cottonwood and oak trees.

May have to print and frame this one. Looking south toward desert mountain from Otts. Hope y'all find all your ear tags and have a fine end of fall.
