Rhino or Gator?

I've been thinking about getting one of those Rhino/Gator type ATV's... We have both a Yamaha Rhino dealer and a John Deere Gator dealer- so the choice would be between those two...

Right now I'm leaning toward the Rhino because it will fit in a horse trailer and be easier to haul around to different pastures....

Anyone have good or bad comments about either one...

I have an 08 diesel Gator. I never thought I would use one, but the boss bought it anyway.... Long story short, after the windshield and roof, I absolutely love it. Just don't try to run down deer with it. Won't keep up like the Kawasaki Prairie 360 will. Don't ask. The Gator will only hold 2 small square bales, plus 2 adult dogs. I think Tators would go for 4, but not Squeek. I will be able to tell you the first what kind of economy we are getting.

I bought a used Rhino about a year ago. It's been alright, but I don't like the small payload (only about 400 lbs.) and the small cargo box. The engine is right between the seats which limits you to a two seater plus they're noisy and you get a lot of unwanted heat off of the engine when the weather is warm. When I trade it off, it won't be on another Rhino. I'm leaning towards a Ranger.

Polaris Rangers are very good outfits. They seat three people, and haul a thousand pounds in the box, plus they are the smoothest riding of any of the UTVs. They make ranching fun. :-)

I bought a Honda big red. Kind of noisy and slow but can haul 1000 pounds. The newer Gators might be OK but I know someone who was using an older one and didn't like it at all. Said it was a POS. I think the Rhino is more of a recreational rig as opposed to a work rig. Soap probably has the best advice.

And make horses lazy, anyway Gators do.

Mine is trained quite well for working cattle. Brought in a cow with a backwards calf this afternoon, just slicker than a whistle.

My 'horns work a whole bunch better with the Kawasaki then the Gator, but better with the Gator then the horses, and I think I have some decent horses.

I may get you completely converted yet! :P

I'd have a hard time buying a John Deere hat.Guys around here all have Rangers and seam to like them. Not real feasable for me I travel to far for one.

Avoid the Rhino. The newer Gators are supposed to be pretty good. The redesigned 2013 Ranger 900 would be the best choice. Would encourage you to look at one before making your decision.

I bought a ranger the draw backs are it uses way to much fuel and is very loud. Which ever brand one chooses get one with a removable cab. One with out a cab limits it's activity.

Get one without a cab. They aren't too loud without the cab, and they don't have as "aggravating" of a motor noise as does a regular straddle-type four-wheeler. Cabs are quite expensive, and are mostly in the way. Yesterday morning was quite chilly. We have about eight feet of rope attached to the end of an eight foot aluminum hook. Any cows that calved away from the shelter of trees, you could use the hook to grasp a hind leg of the calf, dally the rope to the roll-bar, and drag it to where it was out of the wind. We keep our Rangers inside a garage, so that keeps frost off the seats. By not having a cab, you don't have to look through a dirty windshield. In using a spotlight to check cows at night, you can shine the light from side to side without the windshield hampering vision. As far as fuel consumption, they are way easier on fuel than a pickup.

I guess if fuel were a worry turn them off and take a horse.

One of the perks of buying "Beck's" seed from my son is if you plant 100% Beck's every bag will give you some "Beck's Bucks" and you can buy Gators or Rangers with the bucks ( as well as welders and aircompressors and many other tools ) The Rangers cost twice as many Beck's bucks as the Gators but he still gives away around 10 Rangers every year and only 1 Gator in 4 years.

If you come to east central Indiana Rangers are on almost every farm - - - very few repairs and very fast and smooth.

These are the S&H green stamps of the day!

At one time, Polaris and Bobcat were considering merging. Even though it may have never happened, a good name for the new product would have been "Polecat."

If you've ever had a Polaris Ranger, anything else would seem as cumbersome as dancing with a big overweight gal wearing combat boots.

I have had three rhinos basically because of the dealer. This past year my dad bought a Polaris ranger. Way better machine a lot quieter and smoother than the rhino. The rhino has solid back axle so if you load it down in the back it's hard to turn. Polaris has power steering which is nicer than you would think. Also the Polaris goes about 55 mph and the rhino only 42. We use ours a ton and put a lot of miles on them. I am going to get a ranger this year. Wouldn't buy another rhino. Also they get better mileage than a pickup so that's not a good aurgument.

The newest Ranger runs considerably quieter. Can also get an adjustable front seat and a "slow key" to limit the speed to 25 mph, making them a little more kid safe. Not sure if it really does get better gas mileage than a pickup, though. lol
