This is a pre-64 model 70 Wincherster 270. My Grandfather owned this rifle and had the stock custom made. Grandpa passed away in the early 80's, I was not old enough to remember him. I inherited this rifle in 2003.

Wow nice looking firearm...And quite a family heirloom...
I'd have a tough time owning something like that- because I like to shoot them and use them-- and thats definitely not one you could go throwing behind the seat of the feed truck....

WOW! That is an amazing piece of craftsmanship. Pretty dang cool that you get to have it. I have a 30-30 that a great uncle used when he rode with the Texas Rangers lots of years ago. Thank you for sharing that rifle with us! You are the MAN! On a side note, can I see the rest of the elk mount? :D :D You can't tease me that way, Pal!

Wonder if the stock's made of Maple? Appears to be. Either that or Birch. Much harder wood than Walnut.

I see the date "1972" on the right side just above the trigger, is that when he had the stock made?

Nice work of art. Very nice......................

I don't have any idea what kind of wood it is made off. I am extremely ignorant when it comes to different types of trees. Growing up in the Sandhills the only trees I had ever seen were cotton wood and cedars, the cedars are planted. I have no idea what either one looks like when cut for lumber, other than good cedar has a red color.

H that is one hell of an elk. I would probably tell the story wrong, but I am sure that that is the only elk JF has ever shot. I will see if I can get him to post a picture or send me one so that I can post it for him.

You menetioned JF. Is that the JF that occasionally posts here?

If it is I had the privileged to meet his Dad when he stopped in with Bob M on their way home from Rockglen SK.

I would say that is probably correct. I know Bob is related.

Bob M's mother and JF's dad's dad were brother and sister. Bob M and JF's dad are first cousins. JF and I are second cousins. JF's sons and my sons are third cousins. Oh, what a tangled web we weave.

That sounds like a family tree to me, not a tangled shrub . . .
