Riley Whines About Satellite Camps

Nebraska head coach Mike Riley is just one of many coaches to come out and express a dissatisfaction with the NCAA's voting to ban satellite camps, and he says the vote caught him by surprise.

"I was surprised at the vote. I don't know how they vote. I talked to (Washington coach) Chris Petersen and we both were wondering how in the end this all gets decided," Riley said in a story published by The Lincoln Journal-Star.

The Big Ten was the only power conference to vote against the proposal to ban satellite camps, while the ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC all voted in favor of the ban (as well as the Mountain West Conference and Sun Belt Conference). The ban is effective immediately, meaning Riley had to cancel any plans he had to work at a satellite camp this summer, as he did last year and previously at Oregon State.

That doesn't sound like whining to me. It sounds like a legitimate question.

The ruling begs the question as to why the Criminal Conference is doing their damndest to keep many athletes living in the region from receiving a free college education. This was a set up deal from the get go, primarily due to Saban bitching and whining. Just like the criminal enterprise known as the Mafia, the name of the game is to eliminate ANY competition.

Saban was against the unlimited texting and that went through.

Strange how you see the satellite camp thing when every other conference voted against it. But you're strange anyway.

Coming from someone who totally supports an athletic conference where corruption and criminal activity is given the wink and the nod, I'll take that as a complement.

Funny how the decision was made without any investigations, studies, or prior hearings. Looks like they wanna continue keeping a brotha down...south, that is.

Q: Why are they controversial?

A: ACC and SEC rules prohibit their coaches from stepping outside the 50-mile radius, even if invited as guests. You can see the problem. While Michigan coaches can get face to face with prospects at a camp in Prattville, Alabama -- conveniently home to a high school power powerhouse -- coaches from Alabama and Auburn must stay home, because Tuscaloosa sits 90 miles from Prattville, and Auburn is 70 miles away.

In 2008, the NCAA passed what was called the Saban rule, banning head coaches from hitting the road and evaluating recruits in person during the spring. The public spin on it was to prevent "bump-ins" between coaches and recruits on their high school campus, but the real reason behind it was coaches were sick of being outworked during the offseason.

Maybe they are. But the NCAA can't ban Saban from visiting campuses in the spring and then turn around and let Michigan hold camps in his backyard plus a week of spring practice in Florida. It had to go one way or the other.
The satellite camps benefit no one except the big money schools.

So you're saying that no student athletes ever benefitted from the satellite camp experience?

Can you say no student ever benefitted from going to Disney and it's experience? What good do they do?

I can say the coaches & schools benefit from satellite camps more than the student athletes. What's wrong with good old-fashioned scouting, official & un-official visits, watching films and listening to the high school coaches?

What's wrong about having a venue where these kids can see and be seen, without undue travel or financial obligations, that they otherwise might not be able to ever take advantage of?

Or, to put it another way, is a kid from the south better off accepting an athletic scholarship from Nebraska, Michigan, or Wisconsin, for example, and getting a degree... or is he better off staying home and being a short order cook at the Waffle House or going on welfare? The south has more qualified athletes than available scholarships. Is Saban THAT insecure?

The camps are just another way to weed out the lesser talented players and for the schools to save money by not paying for their "Official" visits to the school and the trips by coaches to visit the kid's homes..

I sincerely hope you don't think Harbaugh was doing it just for the kids.

Besides, the population in the northern states is higher than the southern states and there are more people to choose from. You want Harbaugh to pass over the poor Northern boys and make them lose a scholarship to work at a Waffle House just to have a Southern boy get his scholarship? See what I did there?

I call BS on the northern states having more people thing. Chicago is the highest populated city in the B1G, to my knowledge. You start naming off major cities in the SEC vs the B1G, and I'd say the SEC wins it population wise.

I'm no fan of Harbaugh, but he has a valid point. The SEC's panties are in a wad because they can't take some competition. Saban's whining reminds me of all the whining and bed wetting Bob Kerry did during the 9/11 hearings when he asked Condi Rice a question and he didn't like her answer...."It's NOT FAIR!!!".

Insecure candy asses.

We wouldn't won't the SEC bag men getting confused as to who they should pass the envelopes off to. We know that if you ask an SEC grad what comes at the end of a sentence, they all answer "parole".

Red & White game today in Lincoln. Lots of visits taking place, and no doubt lots of peer recruiting going on. 70,000+ will be on hand. The Calabasas pipeline will be represented. KJJ has done more for Nebraska recruiting in a couple of months than Bo and his gang of incompetent idiots ever accomplished in their entire tenure.

I've got a feeling that Saban is going to be sick of the word CaliBraska in the not so distant future. You think he'll threaten to hold his breath the next time his panties get in a wad and he complains to the NCAA?

What was it a Huckster coach once said? 'I don't want my team to be good enough to get put on probation, I just want it to be good enough to get investigated' . Ha!!!!

Name him.

The SEC holds the lifetime belt for investigations, sanctions, probation, and criminal activity. That's something to be really proud of.

BTW....a highly ranked player who has verbally committed elsewhere (Texas) is now putting it out on social media that he'd jump at an offer to make an official visit to Lincoln. Something big is brewing in Lincoln. These high school athletes can sense it, much as sharks can sense blood in the water. They want to be a part of it. Too bad many supposed football geniuses are in denial about it.

Gee,like all the other drivel you post about Nebraska, THAT'S real current as well. Last time Bob was HC was over 40 years ago. Relevant......
