Ty got lucky and won a saddle bronc riding this year or should I say a gift certificate for a new Todd Sloan-he ordered it down in Farmington and I prepaid the freight to get it sent up-I thought it was pretty much a done deal. It came today and the FEDS nailed me another $277 in duty, taxes, brokerage etc. He's in the hunt to win a couple more but I might just tell him to fall off lol.

Sorry about the extra duty taxes. It is said that "all is not gold that glitters." Would the moral of the saddle story be "all is not leather that creaks"? Anyway it takes a mighty good cowboy to win a saddle in any event, and Ty is to be congratulated. He is a talented young man in many different fields. Way to go, Ty. :-)

If the saddle was made in the USA there shouldn't have been Duty. The taxes should have been GST which you should be able to claim back if you have a GST number. Brokerage is a bugger. Should had it sent to Plentywood and picked it up when you were down.

Yep. Know all too well about that. That's why you always ask the foreign exporters to lie about the value of the object on the slip or get it marked as a 'gift'.

NR next time get it sent to a friend in the States and then have them ship it up, that way you don't get tagged for all the extras $$$$'s my sister is always buying stuff on EBay and she just gets it sent to me and I remail it

That don't fly BMR. I have imported lots of different things with big MADE IN USA labels on them and the packing slip says the same. I don't even mess around anymore. Before I buy something worth $100, I ask the seller to mark it's worth as $20-$30. If they don't want to do that, I go elsewhere. You would be surprised. A lot of US exporters know all too well how much Canada Customs lives to screw you.

BMR and I have a mutual friend in P'Wood would of got it up on the cheap-he needs a new bronc saddle-I guess we'll stick it on a couple chute fighters down south and get it scuffed up before we go north. I wanted to get it up here by Christmas I guess they seen me coming lol.

Aaron is right on the mark.

That is why I no longer order from the big name folks - Cabela's, Bass Pro and so on. They will not reduce the price on the sticker.

They even have a special section that deals with Canadians - because of taxes and duty and "extra's".

Even "made in the good ole U.S. of A." will ding you for postal and federal and provincial taxes.

Depending on the item it can often make the final take home price all most exactly two times the original sticker price.

And we have not even taken into account the exchange rate.

So, we do our absolute best to avoid any purchases from the U.S. of A. - it has to be vital to the operation before we even look south of the border now.

So much for free trade.

Some items - certain pieces of farm equipment come to mind - do not carry any duty - but to be sure you can go to Canada Customs web site and find out - they literally list everything you can imagine and the duty - or lack thereof - and you can call them for free and plain old ask.

Cheers

I had a friend who sent an old family picture in a frame to Canada via UPS. They put a value of $40 or $50 on it and it cost the person in Canada $40 duty to pick it up. If they would have valued it at $10, there would have been nothing due even tho it was a picture in a frame.

It's nuts.

It sure is a nice saddle-has barbwire tooling-is mostly roughout-silver lace cantle and an inlaid seat-I don't think he'll put it on a horse for awhile. Though those geldings he got from BMR would look pretty sweet under it. He's got to go win Daddy one now lol.
