Rock Jasmine

Talking about a strange year-- this year we have a little plant coming up all over town on vacant lots, on fields that were left idle, and on pasture areas that were overgrazed...Little plant with a yellowish flower--Looks like a minature tansy mustard from a distance--except only about 2-3 inches high...Some vacant lots in town are just covered with it- thicker than a lawn.....And in all my years living here I never saw it before that I can remember...

I called the local weed control guy- and he says it is Rock Jasmine- and that it only shows up when all the conditions are just perfect- maybe every 20-30 years or more-- said its easy to control/kill with spray or tilling- but most folks are just letting it run its course, since it matures fast and may not reappear again for 50 years.....

Learn something new every day.....
 
Heres a couple websites I googled up-- apparently native as they say they been around since the days of Lewis and Clark...And it wasn't just me that never saw them before- anyway not as thick as they are to notice them- as I had 2 old ranchers, both over 80 years old that lived here all their life that was asking me about them the other day....

After checking more closely, I don't think that is the plant.

Ours looks like a miniture of fan weed or penny cress.

I think it might be called pepper weed, but I can't find any listing for it. There sure is a lot of it! :cry:
 
Alyssum desertorum.

Madwort.

Type of mustard. Supposed to not be harmful to livestock, I guess. Can't find out a lot about it yet. :?

I wasn't avoiding you- just hadn't smelled any...Yesterday when I was fencing I picked some..... My sniffer ain't very good with those fancy scents- but actually I couldn't smell any scent at all.... :?
 
We have been having a bunch of the primrose plants as well here in East Texas. Adds a nice touch to the paintbrushes and bluebonnets. I took some pics of them at San Jacinto Monument. Nope I didnt smell any scent either but that dont stop them from being pretty :D
