Rock/Root Rake (new toy)

Finally got dry enough from the last snow to try out our new toy. Silver has probably seen a few of these as they are made in his area. Kind of "farmerized" but hell for stout. Tractor at 900 rpm and low gear. This ground should have been chiseled again but it is doing a good job as it is.

That's actually a little fancier than the ones I've been around. It's got a slip clutch and everithing And you're right... that thing is stout. The cattlemen's assoc. used to have a windrower but it wasn't nearly so stout looking, although it worked pretty good.
When we were doing alot of breaking we had a root rake that looked like a 6 wheel hay rake.... on steroids. Worked pretty good for roots and smaller rocks.

This one is made by Dika. I have a picker and rake made by Schulte, the rake works well for clean up but is too light for the amount of rocks we have at the start. :shock: I used a wheel type root rake a few years back, it really did a good job.

Your area is definately HIGH on our list of places to come visit!! Don't look too hard but I would like more details on how they work and how you pick the stuff up. Do you farm it first then use the root rake?

In honour of the white settlers that came to Bella Coola in the late 1800's I call our rockpicker "The Iron Norwegian"

Nicky, find "Schulte" website, they have short videos on their equipment. Our picker is their Jumbo RS320. We do use a chisel plow to loosen the ground before we try to do anything with rocks.

It is seeded with a conventional seed drill. We logged this land about 12-14 years ago. Can't tell you if it is profitable or not but I know having land grow nothing but rocks and stumps is definately not.

The rocks are the topsoil. Unfortunately they have to be removed before a crop can be harvested. We do use these areas for winter feeding and once a few crops of rocks have been harvested we grow oats and peas for baled silage.
