I went to my first rodeo this year, and being a liberal tree hugger:) I thought that I was really going to NOT enjoy the event. However I had free tickets and it was a chance to get out of the house.

Anyway, I spent a lot of time chasing my toddler around the fairground, but of what I saw I was pleasently suprised. Nothing offended my liberal sensabilities (not even the patriotic music;))

The best part was at the very begining, when the Announcer (probably has a better title than that) rode out on a horse, said his peice and rode off. The beauty and majesty of that horse gallaping just a short distance was a wonder to behold. All of you who own horses are lucky beyond belief just to get to behold their grace and beauty. It took my breath away. (Not that I'd never seen it on TV- but this was real and now and here) I"m sure you don't have time to just sit around and watch the horses run all day, but if you get a chance, just apreciate it for a moment.

I don't know if this comment really belongs here, but I figured that saying something postive, on my first day to the board couldn't hurt.

Thanks to the rodeo, I am now a horse fan in a way that I never was before.

I am very new here, and I would really appreciate some sort of response, just to know how I am being recieved. Even if it's just to tell me to get lost.

Thanks.

Hi there bunny. I better not call you bs for short, that could get me in trouble. I am just having fun with you, I hope you know. Welcome, and sometimes duck when you post.

You are correct about rodeos. They can be fun, and the animals are treated pretty well in most cases. What lots of outsiders don't realize is that the stock enjoys bucking as much as the riders enjoy their rides. And if the animals aren't taken care of well, they don't perform well, nor make the rodeo any money either. I hope you enjoy your time here.

And rodeo contestants are very good athletes mostly, and they are like us ranchers, they do it for fun, as much or more as for the money. lol.

thank you jake. I guess I didn't think through my handle before hand, lol. I was just trying to think of something i could use to post a few comments. Whenever I regester on a forum after hanging out there for a bit I come up with a thousand better handles. Although I am animal rights, tree-hugging liberal, anti-hunting  ect, ect, I'm a bit of a "prodigal country girl"- though the city I'm from barely qualifies as either urban or rural, it's pretty much in between. But there is something wonderful about the country, and there's a little bit of Dorethy Gale, 'there's no place like home' feeling I get about the country now that I've seen a bit (though not much) of the world. I'm afraid I'm not making sence and everyone is going to get all the wrong ideas about me, lol. Oh well, it takes a while to get to know anybody.

Thanks for responding. I'm really quite excited about getting to know the ranchers and farmers and so forth here, now that I'm over my initial shock of the 'liberal bashing' from the other thread;)

UH- her, nothing in the above had anything to do with the rodeo but oh well! :cboy:

Bunny- If you, like so many true Liberals, practice one of the exotic religions that believe in reincarnation---pray that you come back in your next life as a rodeo bull or bronc......

What a life- all the best eats, see the world, work 8 seconds every week or two, admired and respected by the cowboys and the fans, a chance to be a champion in your world--and if you feel like it a chance to stomp or horn in on any cocky cowboy you want without being chastised...

Then after retirement a life of being put out to stud- just don't get any better :)

LOL, I'll give that some thought. But what if they make a mistake and I end up getting re-encarnated as a beef steer and have to be castrated?

oldtimer, i checked your wwwlink. Pretty cool.

I have a personal angel in my life that raises quarter horses. I'm not in touch with her any more, it was a semi-professional relationship, but your site brought her to mind. All I can say is that she's a wonderful person with more energy than 5 normal people and a very good heart.

Well Bunny if nothing else your a brave girl to get involved with this group!Yes we treat our horses well as well as our cattle, stick around, you'll learn that ! you'll learn alot here, read ALL the posts, theres alot of fun here but alot of serious debates also.signed Greg, rancher AND hunter

welcome to the forum bunny. I think you will find most people here are pretty level headed and treat everyone fairly. Even Liberal tree hugging animal righters are allowed thier opinion.

I am a very conservative fella, but even I could learn to love the Kennedy's. ( if I owned a liquor store that sold condoms and porn and gave out free choice pamphlets)

Welcome bunbun!

As for treehugging, where we live there are so few trees, that it considered a sin and an act or violence, to cut a tyree down. I doubt there are many people in the world who plant as many as I and my neighbors do, at least as far as the few that survive! Seems like we are beating our head against a wall, but "never say die!"

As fr as hugging a tree, I can find lots more fun and comfortable things to hug!

And as for your statement about watching the horses run, you are right. But there is something even better. That is setting on one when it's running or better yet, cutting cattle! Try it sometime! :)

And please don't take offense too quickly here, as we are sort of a rowdy bunch and like to kid and tease each other. Huh, Haymaker and BMR?

Considering that we are talking about an admitted Left-Wing Liberal uninformed kook - I am not EVEN going to comment about the possibility of not reproducing like kind! The fewer we have the better off we are. I expressed my opinion of you on the other forum. Needless to repeat it here!

Condoms are a good thing. Better than the alternative which is the spread of AIDS. I just saw a good show on a guy who gives out condoms in Thailand.

Porn and liquor in moderation used by adults are likely not harmful. But I have to agree that adiction to either is bad. I remember that the European kid who was our exchange student left his television tuned to a porn show (I didn't even know there were such things until recently). They appear to be much more ho hum about porn in Europe. Are there any teenaged boys anywhere who don't look at girlie magazines or the Internet or videos?

Kennedy men seem to be oversexed to me or have been brought up to behave badly with women. IMHO.

I won't touch the Right to Choose vs Right to Life stuff here :)

I agree that condoms are a good SECOND choice, and I do enjoy a beer now and then. I am no prude.

just had a good chance to hit a Kennedy and I never pass up on those!

My kids are just getting into Jr. High, and I am learning real fast the true meaning of "do as I say, not as I did" because my high school years were a bit on the wild side.......

Ironic, isn't it? My kids are way tamer than I was. I don't discuss my youth with them. They do know I grew up in the late '60s in Northern California so they draw their own conclusions.

My son might be a little wild -- but very controlled. My daughter's only wildness is to have parties at her apartment and drink too many sweet drinks. She doesn't like alcohol unless creme de menthe or peppermint schnapps or something nasty like that is involved.

Redneck in High School and early 60's - then my wife was very sick one night at Standford - Long haired Hippy Dude Doctor walked in - all I could do to keep from throughing him out

At a Dr. Staff meeting - 2AM - the Prof. turned to Hippy and said - - "If we save this little girl tonight it's because of what you did"

V_Key has found pictures with my hair (when I had it) down to my belt

V_Key and I talk freely about every mistake I've mad - - I think (hope) she learns forn my mistakes. She 22 and it looks like she has learn'd

Welcome bunny-sympathy, I know it takes all kinds to make the world tick and I hope you will learn about our way of life and the love we have in what we do. If nothing else to realise why we do it.

Keep posting cause it's always good to see another's point of veiw.

So V_Key is your daughter? My son is 21. Daughter 25. You'll know what I was like in the late '60s if I tell you I was at Univ of California at Santa Cruz. Enough said... But high school first year was Tomales High School, totally country and I guess redneck although I didn't know the concept then, Future Farmers of America and all that. My daughter was at Stanford.

Just talked with my daughter and she was in the lab (research scientist) on this BEAUTIFUL Indian Summer Sunday, so she can't be too wild

weellll, maybe . . . Did she mention what the research was on?

Back on the topic of rodeo, last week I was at a rope and drag branding of fall calves. The help included a current top ranked saddle bronc rider who has moved here recently, a local rancher who I think was a college bareback champion rider in his day, and a few of us other local guys who tried to stay out of the way.  No one ever got in a hurry or tense about a thing, and we took time for the two guys to drag calves on 4 3yr. old colts for the first time. Considering that we used Nord Forks, the colts worked very well. It was a fun day to get together and do something we all enjoyed doing.

One reason I myself have shied away from participating in rodeo is that the pace of the events isn't always the best for a ranch horse to keep his mind in. Take team penning for example. It may be fun (don't know I've never done it), but it is exactly the wrong way to handle horses and cattle. If someone rode like that on this ranch it would raise the hair up on the back of my neck. :!: Only as a last resort would it be ok. Maybe I am a prude, but I like it that way.
