Rookie question

Sure! If she gets exposed to a bull just wait 9 months and 9 days and she'll probably calve. But if she's 4 then she probably had a calf as a 2 year old, then missed last year so this will be her 2nd calf. Why didnt ya breed her last year?

Why of course, everyone is entitled to an ' off' year!!

Think nothing of it......

:-) thats good to hear , she is my neighbors "pet" but a nice cow, another fellow was saying that a cow has to be bred 90 days after she has a calf or she will not be fertile :? did not sound right so i figured i would put it infront of people that actually know what they are talking about :-)

Does Ankony still have ties with Leachman Cattle Company? I seen some nice bulls in their line-up.

No, that was about 40 or more yrs ago.

Oh, ok, I was just wondering if they still might be working together. Where do you guys market your semen? I haven't seen an Ankony bull in the big places like ABS, have I?

All you need to know is right there.

Most of the semen is sold thru Ankony....some is sold thru the studs...but not much.

Thank you much. These might be just the genetics I need for outcross calves or for my showy Angus. Preciate it.

I can't believe what I just read. I don't have any cows that are entitled to an off year, and I'm supposed to buy bulls from someone who thinks like this? BMR, you nailed it.

When you have THOUSANDS of bovines on different ranches spread across the US...there is no way EVERYcow gets bred and stays that way.

He just said that this was a ' pet' cow....not the Res. Grand Champ cow.....so if she misses a year....BIG FREAKIN" DEAL!!!

Pet cows are just that, Pets. When I retire there will be a half a dozen cows kept here with no bull. All commercial and purbred operations should expect a calf every year without exception, if not she goes down the road. As far as the 90 day thing, you are losing ground if she is not bred back 83 days (give or take) from calving. That is of course plenty of time, if calving went well she should be having at least her second cycle by breeding time. I try to follow the Dick Diven protocall of gaining weight at time of calving is of great inportance for getting rebred.

Wow, aren't you and you're THOUSANDS of cows something! I would expect better husbandry from you. Regardless of the massive number of cattle you have, open cows do not deserve a second chance. You're right, there is no way that EVERY cow gets and stays bred. Those that don't need to hit the road.......period.

You said that everyone is entitled to an off year and there are many of us who disagree strongly with you......and it's disturbing that a seedstock producer would think the way you do.

Many of us are working with our own hard earned money rather than someone else's and open cows are a BIG FREAKIN' DEAL.
