Subject: A little ditty re: social security

Our Social Security

Many years ago in Seattle, two wonderful neighbors,
Elliott and Patty Roosevelt came to my home to swim on
a regular basis. They were a great couple full of
laughter and stories that today I continue to marvel
at. Both are now deceased, but their stories remain.
During the years of our friendship we had many, many
discussions about Elliott's parents (President Franklin D.
and Eleanor Roosevelt) and how his father and mother
never intended for the Social Security and Welfare
programs to turn out the way they are today. Elliott
used to say that if his parents returned to earth and
saw what the politicians had done to their programs
they would have burned all of them in hell.

Here is a story I received today regarding the Social
Security Program and I immediately thought of
Elliott's comments. I Hope you will read
this and think about it.

_____________________________________________

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
completely voluntary,

2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
incomes into the Program,

3.) That the money the participants elected to put
into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,

4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent "Trust Fund" rather than into the
General operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees
would never be taxed as income.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month --
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to "put
away" -- you may be interested in the following:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the
independent "Trust Fund" and put it into the
General fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
controlled House and Senate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax
deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the
"tie-breaking" deciding vote as President of the
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving
annuity payments to immigrants?

AND MY FAVORITE:

A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them,
even though they never paid a dime into it!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, after doing all this lying and thieving and violating
of the original contract (FICA), the Democrats
turn around and tell you that the Republicans
want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed
citizens believe it!

==============================================
If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of
awareness will be planted and maybe changes will
evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully
sure of what isn't so.

But it's worth a try. How many people can
YOU send this to?

Actions speak louder than bumper stickers.

What i don't understand is this?if the dem's did all these bad things, and i am not saying they did or did not,but i will take this mans word.....Why did the repub's not switch it back when they took over power of decision? They ran it the same way under thier rule too....So why not get on all repubs that goverened after Jimmy carter.....You maybe right in who changed things but at least piont out that ALL parties have used the latest rules....If the repub's did not agree they could of changed things....maybe they did but that was never posted in this last thread....you bring up LBJ as one who changed things, but you do not bring up Nixon for not changing it back, and continuing to use the plan set up by these, bad, bad, bad people called democrats......Same for Jimmy, bad bad bad Carter, but Ronnie R never change things back either...just wondering if that matters or does it all just fall on the bad, bad, bad dem's?

Good post, DOC HARRIS. Say, since you are a chiropractor, maybe you could work on Disagreeable over the airwaves. She needs chiropractic attention, as her nose is always out of joint about something and there is that great big chip on her shoulder.

If not for social security how would the Americans living on that alone in old age make it? :???:

The other thing to think about soical security is when it was implemented what was the average livespan of people? People sure were not living for 20 years on it...

I was taught that Social Security was never meant for being THE ONLY
thing to live on when you were older. It was meant to help with finances you had in place already.

It wasn't meant as the only source of income, because it never was
going to be enough by itself.

Real bright post!

A real good question. I don't see you providing an answer, though. Just more insults.

nonothing, you're asking those sensible questions again. If you don't watch out, they'll be calling you names and insulting you. But they won't have an answer for your question.

It's always worth while to pass on lies as the truth. But the best and funniest thing about Social Security is this:

When Bush made his move to destroy the program, some right wing think tank put out a survey to the leaders of the conservative movement, asking for the ten worst government programs. #1 was Social Security. Medicare was in the top 5, don't remember which one. But not a single Republican candidate this year will be running on the platform of destroying Social Security and Medicare. Not a one. President Bush has said that he plans to make another run at Social Security next year. Some Democratic groups are asking every politician up for reelection if they support Social Security. They'll make those responses available to the candidate's opponent. :) The Republicans are afraid to speak the truth about Social Security, Doc. President Bush could have "fixed" Social Security right after his last election. He had politicial capital and could have saved the program. But instead he tried to kill it. He tried to hand his Wall Street pals a multi-billion$$ package and Americans rejected that. They made it very clear to Congress that they didn't want to kill Social Security. And, of course, if we'd take the $5billion we're spending in Iraq this month, it would go a long way in the Social Security program.

If Republicans touch SS or Medicare the Liberals will holler that Conservatives want retired people to have to live off of dog food until they die because they cant get health care.
Im thinking when they have to they will just up the age that you have to be to draw SS.
This is a Canadian idea so I know you guys wont be interested but you should look at our Registered Retirement Savings Plans. This is a private but Federally regulated plan that works well. It doesnt cost anything because private banks do all the work. Plus you can keep the regular SS to satisfy the liberals.
