In the 60's We Leased out a Fancy, High Dollar, Top Track Record, TB Brood Mare to what I THOUGH was a Friend a Fellow Stockman, Deputy SC County Sheriff - "Bernie Dillard" - on a Hand Shake.

This is what we got back

And then we had to find her and go get her back when we found her.

We Vetted her, Deloused her and tired to bring her back "slowly"! A year later we had her out to pasure - she look (Not Right) but pretty good but it had an effect on her mind - as I was leading her in one day she through her self over backward and boke her shoulder - We cried then and when we found her - the only time I felt like killing someone

I rescued a horse that looked pretty much like this from a neighbor back in the late 80's. When I saw her I told him that I'd either pay him whatever he asked for her or I'd steal her....take his pick! He owed a $600 phone bill ( :???: :???: :???: ) and I'd paid that for him and took her home.

After about a year I ended up having to put her down due to complications caused by her starvation by this fool. She was the sweetest ol' gal. But her heart was broke...you could see it her eyes, she was tired of life.

Come to find out much later...I found the original owner by a quirky chance of fate and she had been a G. Champ at the Denver Nat'l back in the 70's.... she was a reg Arab mare. I knew she was mostly Arab but had no idea of her pedigree. This orig owner had boxes and boxes of ribbons, etc she had won in' her day'. The reason he sold her was that she had become the grand kids horse and the kids had grown up . He 'thought' she was going to a good home, he didn't investigate who was buying her or where she was headed.

When I told the original owner what had happened to her BEFORE I got her....he was in such a rage that he went over and tried to track down the guy. Good thing he didn't find him as a whupping would have ensued for sure.

But she lived her last year or so out peaceful and happy and as comfortable as I could make her. The DA still needs an a$$ whuppin to this day!

Wow, that is soo sad. I have brought alot of them home from auction in that condition and fixed em up. Never with that kind of coat though. Looks almost like cushings or something. I have a mare at the moment that weighs about 700 pounds looks like a walking skeleton. She is a three year old filly. The fellow couldnt even pay to have her hauled to auction so I just went up to the house and asked if I could take her. Very well bred. Quite pretty and soo sweet. He just said if you can load her she is yours. Well I walked in, she walked in and she laid down for the trip home. Is there any questions as to why I am a divorcee? I'm always bring home some bird with a broken wing......

I have never undersood, if you can't afford to feed them, sell them......In your case, it woulda been bring them back and settle up. I see this over and over again,

Its idiots liek these that are giving others a bad name-and PETA more ammo. At the showcase the stock was good, but if you looked around the barn you saw a lot of these kinda animals. The one that I am going to mention in particular really po'ed me off. This guy was my age, and eh had a big blonde steer. It had freshly cut horns, missing patches of hair missing, walked without a bit of spring in it's step, and had a low hung head. Yuo could see it's ribs through the unclipped haior. The regs here are that the kids have to do the work-there was no work done here, and when he weighed this big framed steer he weighed 1290. no fat or meat on him. if the steer wasnt keeping up. hed cuss at it, or if the kid slowed down a little then hed crack the end of the leather halter over his nose. When this guy was in the ring, the steer took off, and he lost the round. He was hitting, cussing, and basically abusing the steer. When sale time came you could tell he hasnt been watered in a while, so i brought a bucket of water that was supposed to be for Val and the brothers steer, gave it to him, and left-the owner was none the wiser. The minimum bid was a buck a pound and thats all this guy got-and if we had room in the trailer i would have taken him hom,e, fed him up, gave him a godo home ad al, but the trailer was full. Turns out that an old couple got the steer, took him home, and they dont live far from us, so we were happy that the steer was in a better home. You can tell the difference now-he is eating, looks better, has a spring in his ste agfain and always has water-people told me to work harder with my steer, but if he stopped growing in like march, what do tyou do? This gu diddnt do anything with the steer, and somewhere down the road, i hope it catches up with him-and i dont often do that. Just shows how mad I am with this kid-and his brothers steer was beautiful roan, and had a lot fo beef-the kid diddnt do anything so hes trying to get others to do his wirk-people like this outta have a good a@@ Whoopin.

Um...in the 60's?? Even if it was 1969 that would put that horse at 37 years old....what the hell do you expect it to look like at that age???

Or is that not the same horse, but I read it as it was.

Tibbs, I think you should have used this emoticon
Hey how is Conchos little belly anyway, kinda fat?

yeah I tend to talk before I think sometimes...

Concho is starting to pudge up good, but still has about 3 weeks to go!!!!!

GREAT!! Now ya got all of us waiting around for the "BIG EVENT" like a bunch of first-time grandparents......waiting for the good news and lots and lots of pictures!!! :D :D

Back to the horse~horses are nothing but VICTIMS of those who own them. I raise holy heck when I see something like this. It has created
some embarrassing situations. Not for me, but for the owners.

One case: W. Montana. People had horses in DOG KENNELS. They couldn't even turn around. We couldn't get anything done. Finally, one
woman called one day and I would call the next. We kept it up until
the Sherriff's office couldn't ignore us any more. Sheriff went out there and what he found wasn't pretty. But we got the horses out of the situation and charges were filed. There was also a skinny dehydrated pig on the property, which I won't go into the details, because you never know
who is reading this, and the problems it could create.

Oh....ok...um I'm assuming that picture wasn't taken yesterday huh??? :???:

The photo was taken in 1968
The Mare was 6 or 7 then "I think"

She was well bred and had only just come off the track when we got her - she had a winning Record at the track and was Leased by Bernie as a brood mare - he had a nice Appy Stud and was getting Big Stud Fees -

He was to get his foul and give her back to us in foul - - We went to see her when she fouled for him - - and he wanted to keep her to make sure she got covered - - when we had not heard anything from him in 5 months - we went looking for her - she was not at his place - when I found her in Cottonwood, Ca. - I called the Local SO and Animal Shelter -

They wanted to Impound her but I was a Deputy Sheriff here and would not allow the SPCA to move her (for her safty) - I was allowed to bring her home.

The owners where she was were Retired School Teachers form San Jose and were Big Time PETA members.

The SPCA here and I went to our Sheriff's Office - Bernie was allowed to Retire - The SPCA in Redding "Lost the Case" they did not Loss In Court
as I said They were PETA members and PETA was backing them - - the SPCA In Redding Lost the Paper Work.

I went to a Judge in that county and was told
"I'm tired of you people from San Jose comming up here and trying to tell us how to run things, :(

For my oun peace of mind I dropped it:(

I have been putting photos on CD's and found this

I bought a 2 yr old filly that looked similar to a moth eaten sheep skin. Like the mare in the pic it took along time to bring her back. When we got her we had to almost carry her into the trailer. It was crazy vet bills actualy putting the feed in her mouth and helping her chew for the first few days . When her coat started coming in better and she was getting on well .I did all the ground work with that I dared and the sent her to my grandfathers. That is were she stayed for a year to grow . When we came back the next spring to a very health filly . At that time I was 12 yrs old up until 1997 she was the best horse I've ever had and the best friend. Her favorate things were peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and afterdinner mints. They all need a second chance.

Old Dog, I been there many times. We use to rescue track horses. It was hard at times, because they all wuoldnt make it back. The stupid idiots that had them, and they wouldnt run..so they just quit feeding or tending to them at all. Got a few good horses that way, but lost a few sweet critters that just didnt have it in them to come back to life.

At one time there was a Killers Lot in Newark - when the Tracks here would close many Trainers would not have Trailer space for all their Horses and would sell them there.

Some trained would leaver the singed Reg Papers with the Killer in hopes someone would pick-them-up (the horse and papers) - I was one of those someones - - A buddy of mine had just started a Pinto Horse Assoc. in San Jose - I could buy (save) anything with color and have Reg. Papers on them with-in a week.

Extra Horses to ride and sell for Extra Money - buy a horse for $55 to $75 and ride it for a month and sell it for $800 up - - the very good horses I could ride longer and...

I have looked at Reg Papers and seen a "Canner Horse" named that I saved some years before

IF this is the same folks I am thinking of, I remember that horrible case!! What ever happened to them, anyway??? Typical "slap on the wrist" or did they actually receive their "just reward".....prison time??

I don't know who you are thinking of, ranchwife. Could it have been the Kelloggs?

This was small potatoes compared to the Kelloggs who moved in with a whole bunch of horses and dogs. Our banker lived out there by them and he didn't think things were right, so asked me to go take a look at that deal. It was pretty sad. The Kelloggs bought that place with 2 houses. They turned one house over to the dogs and ruined it. They had dogs in every corner of every spot there was. It was the first time I was face to face with a puppy mill. It was horrible. The heat got on and they left the country. Went to Wyoming and tried the same thing, but Wyoming has better laws for this type of thing and they were convicted of animal abuse. Got them all taken away. As they should have.

The people at the dog kennels in the south valley was just the
Ken Mc______________* They had mares and colts running in that swamp below the kennels that were confiscated. The colts were so parasite infected they had to be put down.

Nothing is too good for these kind of people if you ask me.

*I'd have put the whole last name in, but I'm not positive I am remembering it correctly. :?
