Here's the latest.

Here's a big ol' hunk of wet leather that has to be formed and fitted to make the seat piece. I've got it on the draw down, and I've beaten on it with a hammer, to stretch it and make it form to the contour of the ground seat.

Now I've cut it to shape and have started the stamping, carving design.

This has a scratch line of the flower carving pattern I've drawn to use on this saddle.

Here's the pattern after I've cut all the lines with a swivel knife.

Now I've got the first line of basket stamping done.

Almost done basket stamping with this side, time for a break so I don't get carpal tunnel.

Basket stamping done.

Stamping on flower pattern done.

Now I just have to do aqll this on the other side. sometimes I wonder if it's worth it.

I talked to the feller who is getting this saddle, tonight and he said to tell all of you who are interested, that it IS his saddle and no, IT'S NOT FOR SALE! He seems to think he's waited long enuff' for this saddle! Sorry.

You do very fine work a true craftsman.I can see you don't cut corner's and build a true work of art.you should be very proud.good job.

Are you having as much fun documenting your work, as you are building the saddle Jinglebob?

Nope, but then hired hand, asked me to save some pictures for him and several on this thread asked me too, so I guess it is worth it, to help out nice people. Nice people? Am I sure about that? Hmmmmm, hired hand is the only one I know personally, who asked, I think,so maybe they aren't all nice people. Hey wait a minute! Why am I taking all these pix? Oops, sorry, I let the "mean jinglebob" out for a second there!

If you don't understand that reference, go check out a post cattlerme posted on a thread, about the "nice jinglebob". It was too cute!

Oh and by the way hired hand, welcome to this site and yup, your butt is going to be smiling, when you set down in this saddle. If not, we'll make it so it does!

Like Greg said the saddles coming along really nicely,Hmmmm funny how some people can say anything and still be called nice.... :P

Great job ! :D How long have you been making saddles for? This is an interest of mine that I hope to take up in the future. Was this something that you apprenticed at or just started as a hobby? By the way I think it's great how you are documenting the progress of the saddle. It will be great in a photo album as a potfolio. Again great job hope to see your future work. :D

That stamping sure is pretty JB. Those flowers would sure look nice on a hand made purse................................. :D :D :D

Seeing as tomorrow is Sunday and I can't work on Sunday, I might have to work on a purse for some spoiled little daughter in law! I can't call it work, as I'm pretty sure there will be little if any pay in it! At least the monetary kind of payment. But she will owe me, big time!

Thank you. I've been making saddles for around 15 years I guess. I started with an old one, I didn't like the ground seat in. I worked on it as a hobby, then a friend moved back to this country. He wanted a pair of chinks and had a youth saddle that he had started on and a real good book about saddle making. We traded the saddle and book for a pair of chinks. When I got that one done, I started from scratch and made one. This is the saddle that Mrs. JB Jr rides, until she gets a better one.

I've never apprenticed until this year and that is for sheridan style carving. But the guy who is helping me with that has showed me some better ways to build a saddle. Mostly I just learned from trial and error and there have been quite a few errors! But you just fling the mistakes and cut out some more leather!

Every saddle maker I've run across has been more than kind, at answering any questions I have. No more than I get built in a year, I don't think too many are worried about me taking any business away from them!

When I get older and some younger feller takes over around here, I hope to make saddles, year around and turn out more of them. Of course, the price will go up for one too!

Jingle Bob Your saddles look good. How long have you been making saddles for the public? And what is your customer? Trainer, cowboy, dude, etc.
