This is a link to a article about a tour organized by a group I am involved with. We had a great time and saw some new country.

That is one beautiful bird. Is the Sage Grouse completely protected now or is there some hunting still allowed?

No hunting of it is allowed in Canada and most states have either no hunting or restricted seasons. They don't think hunting is the cause of the decline in bird numbers and it is mostly habitat loss and predators but when number are low every bird counts.

Interesting. And when I asked about the restrictions on hunting, I actually had the Prairie Chicken in mind.

I did some grouse hunting in Manitoba when I used to go up there to deer hunt every year and really enjoyed it. Shot both Ruffed Grouse and Spruce Grouse back in the bush and harvested a few Sharpstail Grouse in the farmland. There was another smaller grouse I'd see on the drive back into civilization but don't recall the bird's name. I think it was an import.

We have lots of Sharptails.
The small bird was probably a Hungarian Partridge.

What were you doing in Manitoba?
Checking out the "Snow"?

Hungarian Partridge is indeed the bird. Fairly small from what I recall, at least compared to the Sharpstails.

My brother and I drove up there for a number of years deer hunting. Fun while it lasted but I was always ready to get away from that white mud. :D

The breast of the Hun's are the best eating. Sharptails aren't that tasty so I'm told. I raise them but don't hunt them. Hun numbers have been down the last couple of years, cold wet springs and lots of hawks and other predators.

We have huns and sharptails here too.
This year has seen the best pheasant hatch for
a long time. Nice to see them, even if they scare the beejezus out of
your horse when you are riding. We have never allowed Sage Grouse to
be hunted here, but still, their numbers are down.

We were given some Pheasant breasts yesterday. Been a long time since I have cooked those. Any good recipes????

Thin slice the breats and season well with Tony's. Roll in four and fry....don't overcook. Serve with your favorite adult beverage. :D

Thank you, WW. I never thought to thin slice them. I do that with beef at times, but then I cook a LOT more beef than I do pheasant or chicken. I don't think we've ever eaten Huns. I will do what you suggested! I have a great recipe for wild rice soup and pheasant, but I usually use chicken breast for that.
