Leanin'H i can't agree more with that, direct marketing is the way to go,sell on the hoof and let them pay cut and wrap.I sold a buddy of mine a cull heifer last year,he turned around and signed three families up for $350 per quarter plus they pay cut and wrap and he gets his quarter free, and makes a "Profit".People down the road where selling jerseys on the hoof for $2.00 a pound on the hoof customers pay cut and wrap, and our local butcher comes to the ranch and does the slaughter on premise,no driving.Have'nt check lately but i think the local yard is paying $45-58cwt.cull cow.leanin' H said:I am sick of the "give-away" prices on cull cows too. My kinda simple partial solution is to market hamburger cows to the nearest large citys. Here that is Salt Lake and the rest of the wasatch front. I advertise on local websites, post flyers in stores and have even taken out an add in classifieds. Slowly but surely i have a client base of 20 and growing who love getting a whole or half hamburger cow. I deliver the cows to a slaughter plant for my price and they pay for custom cut and wrap. I realize each of ya'll have lots of different circumstances which may not make my plan work, but i thought i'd throw it out there. Folks want to know where there meat comes from and they swear our hamburger tastes better than supermarket burger! When cull cows were higher we got $800 a head and currently we are getting $600 a head. I'd have to haul them 150 miles to the sale barn in Salina, Utah. Now i haul em' 70 to the plant.

I have never seen snow drifts so hard in my life. They have settled, melted a little, frozen again and they are now at the point where they are little icebergs. You can drive right over the top of 10 foot drifts and the cows have realized they don't have to be afraid of deep snow and now they won't stay anywhere because the fence is buried in every dritch, low spot and tree grove. It will be the middle of summer before we get it all fixed I suppose.Lots of quality time with the kids though
