Would like some long-haired cattle but Galloways are too small and Salers are too big.

I would also like some longer haired cattle so they would be better suited for winter grazing I am having the same problem as you

Better try some Welsh Blacks :D
Irish Blacks would be better.

Salers on angus -------when they leave the shelter in a storm,as angus are prone to do,maybe they could outrun the cold :( :( :(

Gelbvieh.......but then I am biased ;-) and yes, we have put a lot more hair on them, although personally, I think hair is over rated, but you will get the docility and performance and the average Gelbvieh cow size is now smaller than the average Angus

Have you ever tried to brand a black angus cow or calf or yearling
in the late fall or spring? They have so much hair, branding them at
that time is really hard. I don't know why anyone thinks black angus
don't have enough hair. We raised them for 30 years and we
never had problem needing more hair.

Good luck in your search!

I know central Indiana is not the great white north but I don't think I have ever had a problem with the cattle being cold in our worst weather if they were in good condition to start with.

For my area the Angus, Herford, Charolis all have enough hair but more important they are able to lay an insulating blanket of fat under the skin if taken care of. Good parasite program ( both internal and external ) good mineral and a balanced ration in sufficient quanity.

Now if I were from a more extreme climate I might have to re-evaluate my position!

Bottom line Angus work for me!

For what it is worth, AngusCowBoy, we rather like our Saler cattle, and the crosses we have to our Angus cattle are very good. I like the mothering, the milking, and the gain that our calves have on strictly grass-fed input. We don't have any of the disposition problems many talk about here, and we are a horse and foot operation. I think each rancher has to figure out what works for him/her and the area they are in. Sure you will find the cross you are looking for, but I felt the need to state that Salers have been mighty good to us and produced a product that was easy to work with and gave a nice return :D

Same deal here. I have angus, herefords, and salers and my saler angus half bloods are my best cows.

Don't give up on Salers catte in a cross-breeding program if you are interested in hardiness, Continentals with calving ease and mothering ability. There are few growthy breeds that will go out and forage the ridges and deserts with a Salers cow. The good breeders that are left have excellent quality cattle and of course they have worked hard on disposition. Had to do that or else quit the breed. Check out McDonalds in North Dakota, Skinners in Drummond, Montana and GG&T Cattle in Quinter, Kansas for the quality stuff. My buddy's large commercial cow herd has quit breeding Salers years ago but the ol' Salers-cross cows still walk his pastures at a fairly old age. They are good mothers and bring in a salty calf in the fall. Cross with Angus or whatever complimentary breed you like and you may well be pleased with the results. This is coming from me, an Angus and Sim-Angus fan all the way. Can't lie about what I've encountered, though!!

We branded a set of calves in NE Montana out of Saler/Hfd cows bred Angus pretty darn shiny calves. The old boy who owned them sure wasn't afraid to critique a Canadians roping lol.

I would put my vote in for Hereford, but I don't see the need to split the baldies off. I bred my baldies for several years to Hereford bulls with outstanding calves as the result. You will get some color, but the pounds you get will pay for it.

If color is really that much of an issue, buy a bunch of herefords to breed most of them. You could get at least 3 crops before there was an issue.

A lot of Salers have a lumpy-looking backline. And, wow, the horns they can get on them. Yeah, they could do well in Montana.
North East South Dakota would be east river....
