Hey all,
I need to put some salt blocks in my pastures soon and my question is: Is it necessary or beneficial to put the salt blocks in a holder? In the past I have set the blocks on the ground, but I am worried about creating dead spots due to salt leeching into the soil. Any thoughts?

either way the salt gets on the ground, my holders have holes in the bottom too. I need to give mine to someone or sell them, we now use the mineral feeders with the rubber tops they lift with their nose, I put a block in one spot and loose mineral in the other two.

it's kinda a neat area to experiment with---high impact hoof action, defecation, urine----scatter a handful of seeds, see what catch's, throw a couple blocks in middle of a patch of something you don't like, see what happens, etc
