Just finished what will likely be my last air crew medical in the military - getting old - they are going to throw me out in about 10 months.
Doctor and I chatted about sugars and fats as he was surprised my cholesterals were so "good".
I told him I ate meat with fat on it.
He told me that people in North America have been sold a bill of goods and that fat is not a problem. In fact he advised me to avoid artificially created, low fat foods as they are not truly good for you. Check the labels - no trans fats, low fat, zero fat, lean this/that and more - all of it was a bill of goods as far as he was concerned. By not eating or fastidiously avoiding fat, people were also depriving their bodies of the good cholesterals and fats.
He also told me that the problem with North America and the problem with obesity was sugar. Back in the "old days" there were few fat people. He believed it was because there was more activity - but also there was no food with "low fat, no fat, no trans fats. no lean" and so on. People ate fat with their food. There was also far less sugar out there.
Sugar in everything - and orange juice was the one I brought up - I tend to drink a lot of it.
He said it was simply cola with no fizz. So I checked the labels - darned if he was not right!
If more people ate fat and moved more and avoided sugar he figured you could cut obesity in half - or more - in one generation.
Out of this one
Best to all

Good post/information. I found out several years ago that when the take the fat out, they add sugar.......!!
We just had this type of conversation dealing with coconut oil. We have a trainer at a gym and he understands nutrition. I mentioned to our doctor that I was using coconut oil for cooking and he about had a coronary and proceeded to tell us how bad that was and to stop using it; that the saturated fat in it was way worse than that found in lard. The trainer at the gym, plus another fellow (a chiropractor/fitness/nutrition guru) totally disagreed and told us why. So I went searching and what I found made the doctor WRONG. Coconut oil has a lot of things going for it.
In the March/April Health and Wellness Magazine there was an article with the head: "Coconut oil. Support wellness and lose weight with this healthy oil." Some of the subheads were: Weight and cholesterol maintenance; Diabetes support; Antibacterial properties. In fact, they say if you don't like coconut oil or aren't having success working it into your diet, you might consider taking a dietary supplement!!
For years coconut oil was considered unhealthy because it contains saturated fat. Furthermore, its bad reputation was based on a highly processed version of the oil called partially hydrogenated coconut oil, which goes through chemical processes that kill essential fatty acids, antioxidants and other key nutritional components. Yet today, scientists are beginning to recognize that not all saturated fats are unhealthy, and additional studies are discovering the benefits of less processed, virgin form of the oil. Virgin coconut oil's main benefit comes from the saturated fat lauric acid, a medium chain fatty acid that supports total wellness (and the list goes on.)
So, BC, I would say your doctor knows more than ours. I am planning to send ours this article. Had we not known the trainer, we would have went right along with what the doctor said. Lots of false info out there.
Interesting about orange juice. I wonder if you squeeze your own oranges if that makes it okay? The trainer said not to eat/drink carbs in the morning; to injest them later in the day as your body uses the carbs differently later in the day.
BTW. he's lost 80 lbs doing this and eliminating bread from his diet.
