Good- Bad- or Indifferent---Can't be any worse than the idiots we've had in there...Probably wouldn't have been nominated if he hadn't agreed to be a Big Corporate Pawn......

Schafer confirmed as USDA Secretary

By Lisa Keefe on 1/29/2008 for Meatingplace.com

As expected, former North Dakota Gov. Edward Schafer was confirmed by the Senate as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Monday. Schafer replaces Mike Johanns, who resigned as secretary last September.

"I congratulate [Schafer] on his Senate confirmation today and I look forward to working with him in the weeks and months ahead," said Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, in a statement yesterday. "It is critical that USDA work with Congress to overcome the challenges in completing a new farm bill for the department to implement. Governor Schafer's leadership can help make this new farm bill a reality."

Since September, Acting Secretary Chuck Conner has headed the agency.

That's the only job requirement, isn't it?

There's a lot more to it than that. You've also got to be an unapologetic yes-man to the administration and have the ability to deliver a complete line of BS and even lie while keeping a straight face. You've got to have selective memory so you can "forget" established protocol and even reverse it - yet you have to have a memory good enough that you can remember when you are to use the OIE and when to ignore them. Finally, you've got to have faith that the people that you are selling out your country to will follow through on their promises to scratch your back if you scratch theirs.

I've known Ed Schafer for quite a few years. He is a hell of a nice guy and very knowledgeable. He never misses a chance to pay tribute to veterans and has jumped on the back of our Harleys many times and rode in parades with us.
When he had to appoint someone for a job and he found a Democrat more qualified than someone from his own party, he appointed that man. I'll never forget when horses lead the parade at the local Veterans Cemetery. There were horse apples everywhere. I told him to be careful where he stepped as it looked like the Democrats had been campaigning again. He brings that up whenever he sees me.

None of this means he will be a great ag sec but at least give him a chance before you start tearing him down! Not even the Pope could change this mess overnight!

I agree fedup2--the North Dakotans I've talked to in the past- and everything I'd heard about him- was that he was quite respected...I just hope he doesn't let GW and that crew drag him down into the pigsty with them....

fedup2, I believe in giving everyone a chance. The pattern I see here is get another man when he finds out what is really going on or the public can't stand him/her selling out the public interest.

If Johanns quit because he didn't want to carry the political sellout's water, he should have and should now state that fact. Otherwise, he is as culpable as they.
