We have never Vaccinated out cow herd with any of the Scour guard vaccines. Our springs can get very wet sloppy and cold during caving season and into the end of June. we do not have a high rate of scours in our caves, so i was wondering if it is worth the cost of vaccinating. What is your experience with it.

We've vaccinated with Scourgard for many years, and would be afraid to not use it now. It doesn't take many dead calves to make the expense and hassle of vaccinating very worthwhile when it's all said and done.

You are saying the same words that most who vaccinate once used. As Soapweed said, I'm afraid to stop now also. You never want to go through a bad scours wreck. :wink:

We still get them to some extent but they are at least treatable now.

A friend of mine changed to late summer calving several years ago and thought he could get away without vaccinating. Cows on grass that hadn't been calved on previously. He did get away with it...... until a wet, cold fall came early. He lost way more calves than ten years vaccine would have cost, not to mention the labour and vet supplies involved.
 
I think the topic should be what kind of scour guard you use. You should definently start well worth it. I have used both scourboss 9 and guardian. Guardian was supposed to be easier on the cow as gave under the skin but I don't think worked quite as well as scourboss 9 in my area anyway.
 
If you have a closed herd & dont share fences you might be fine . If you play at the salebarn it will catchup to you . scourguard is cheap insurance

I'd go with the scourboss 9 that worked well here. I don't play with salebarn cattle and still end up with scours it's in the soil I think. It's not only the calves that did'nt die it's the extra pounds you wean from the others not getting sick.
 
We sure would not go into season with out a good program, I Would have a visit with your vet he can help with setting up a program that works best for you, We used Scourgard KC for years and had very good luck with it, Was visiting with our vet a few years back, he said he would like us to try the new Scour Bose 9, If I remember correct he wanted us to give Scour Bose 3 the first time in the fall when we preg. with a second in mid winter with Scour Bose 9, then yearly there after with just the Bose 9. It does work much better for us because we now just give Scour Bose 9 when we preg. With the Scourgard KC he wanted us to give it to them closer to calving so we had to work them again closer to calving. Good luck 101
 
We are one of the odd ones. We have never vaccinated for scours. We calve in May and June on summer pastures. I lose calves for other reasons but hardly ever from scours. If you don't concentrate calves in a small area where later born calves are exposed to the manure of the older calves you don't typically have a very high risk of scours. Two years ago we had a terrible wet year calving. Our average rainfall is around 16" and in 2011 we had that in April, May and June. I still didn't have a problem with scours.

The only bad scour wreck we ever had was when we used scourgaurd. We haven't vaccinated for 30 years nor have we had a bad scour issue for 30 years.

Has anyone close to you had problems Per?

I'm convinced the crows, ravens and ducks spread them here on top of us being too concentrated.
 
Lefty we do not play in the sale barn nor share fence lines while calving. Started with Scour Guard 3kc years ago. Nothing worse then chasing a sick calf around trying to treat it for scours and then even after all of that having it die was no fun.
Our vet at the time put us onto it. Would never even think about calving without it. We use Scour Bos 9 now.
 
We have never used scourguard and have few problems with scours...We calve March/April- and one of the reasons we do is that is the time we can give the most attention to the cows/calves if we see one with a droopy ear or hint of scours- we can easily doctor... Ours also are allowed a lot of space to run...

Biomoss is a great product and especially where there is a history of
scours. I really believe it isn't the scour vaccine so much as it is
a good immune system that helps to not have scours.

We always used Scourguard 3KC and was scared not to--until 1997 when
we had a terrible spring storm and couldn't get the cows to the
chute to vaccinate them. We of course, have them on a year round
mineral program--and we didn't have any incidence of scours so
we quit the Scourguard 3KC. The immune system of our calves
was such that scours didn't happen.

We listened to a program put on by the local veterinarian about
scour vaccine and they talked for 45 minutes about immune system and how important mineral was; before they even got to their vaccine presentation. If your calves immune system is lacking the vaccine can't
do it's job properly.
