West-River Landowners Ease Hunting Lockout

Western South Dakota landowners who've closed large areas to public hunting in recent years have decided to allow limited access because they're being overrun by an overpopulation of deer and antelope.

Those who wish to hunt in lockout areas, however, must get landowner permission and agree to hunt on foot. And they may only shoot female deer and antelope.

The South Dakota Lockout Coalition was formed by a large group of landowners who disagreed with the state on enforcement of hunting regulations, licensing procedures and predator control efforts.

The landowners claim to have banned or limited public access on four million acres.

A state official says it's no surprise that the landowners are now asking for help in reducing deer and antelope numbers.

Here I am!!! I guess you haven't stopped by my place lately, have you? There is NO hunting here, limited or otherwise.

The lockout signs are posted, big and orange, and stating that they are aimed specifically at GF&P.

The hunters who have stopped in to find out if we really are locked out left without hunting, but all promised to write to GF&P supporting us so they will be allowed to hunt when the legislature finally votes to protect our property rights. Whether they do that or not will have a lot to do with whether or not they will be allowed to hunt here again if our property rights are ever protected by state law.

I don't know where you heard this, but the lockout happened ONLY because of GF&P's insistence that they can come on private property without the landowners knowledge or permission to check to see if hunters like you might be breaking the law.

You gave permission to GF&P to check on you when you bought a license and that's fine with us. However, I didn't agree to the game warden trespassing on my property to make sure you aren't breaking the law and no one is going to hunt here until we know that GF&P will no longer be violating our property rights.

Sorry if you feel neglected, but we've been busy with fall work and I haven't had much time inside lately. I'll try to get back here once in a while so you don't get so lonesome.

Can I ask a question in all honesty. Why would you want fish and game locked out? We've had two incedents with poachers, one on gregs brothers land where the poachers cut the wire on his fence and trespassed on posted land, fish and game caught them and they were procecuted ,lost privilages and guns. The other was a guide we refused permission to hunt on our land,he disobeyed, once again fish cops caught him and he went to court over trespassing on our and others land. We LIKE fish cops.

I reread the thread, apparently theres more animosity to it then I realised, ignore my question.

Sounds to me like you must have good guys. We have some good ones and then some, uhh, ahem, how do I say this, not so good ones and the worst one is the head of the whole shootin' match!

We who are in this lockout, are not against hunters or hunting! I repeat, we are not against hunters or hunting. Matter of fact, many of us hunt.

We are against an arm of law enforcement who has more power than any others. Sherrif, Hiway Patrol or anyone. They can come onto our land at any time and never have to show reasonable cause.

Now, all that being said, I've never had a problem with any coming on and doing that, but I don't like the idea that they have that much power.

Only problem I ever had with a game warden was when one lied to me to try and get me to fence off a big patch of land and water, for wildlife enhancement. He said they would come and plant trees for me and pay all costs. It never happened and I never could get them to hold up their end of the agreement.

Our game officals have to answer to no one but the governor. It's not an electable office, so we have no recourse, when they enact laws, and they do, without going throught the legislature.

Their way of "Managing" the game population, is to just sell licenses and telling the private landowners that we have to allow anybody and everybody to come onto our land and shoot the wildlife. They pay lip service and are very good at telling everyone what a good job they are doing, but when it comes down to it, in the west river area, the private landowners do more for the wildlife and we get run over by the jackbooted game wardens.

Answer your question?

And then we fget slobs like some on here, who claim to be hunters, but show no appreciation for those who feed and care for thew game, all year long, while they only care about them during the hunting season, when they can come and shoot up the country side and drive all over the grass.

Don't get me wrong, there are good people who are hunters, but the jerks and slobs wreck it for everyone else.

For me, it's just easier to put up with the wildlife than to put up with the slobs!

Oh, and sdhunter, don't bother to put in your 2 cents worth. I already know which side of the fence you are on.

Interesting, yes our Fish cops are good guys. They are hired after taking an extended course at a college or university. Are your sherrifs,or police elected?

Trust me JB,we have BAD hunters too.Alot of Canadians and prob. some Americans would be surprised who this guide that trespassed was

Our guys take a course also and it's not a very high paying job.

The head guy is appointed and hires and fires. Anyone who doesn't toe his line is sacked.

I gotta agree with ya on that one, JB............the only thing worse than the Game & Fish around here, is the Forest Circus.............

I really hope your not directing that to me Mr BOB, i have only asked the question. You are right, there are slobs out there who reck it for everyone, but I myself am not one of them. I appreciate everyone i hunt on there land and there are some places they wont allow driving on, even to pick up a harvested animal. Thats fine with me, i have carts and it keeps the wanna-be hunters out. My idea of getting ready for hunting season is not making sure my mirror on the truck is good and tight for a gun rest! I have been around the block a few times and can tell ya for a fact, many, many times the landowner is the worst violator of them all.

I can cut and paste like the best of them, but i cut and pasted the orig post from KELOLAND.com........Also heard it on the radio.

I have some friends who hunted up by Faith I believe....says used to have permission to hunt private land up there but the guy is in the lockout. Guy said he really didnt give a rip but wanted to support his neighbors. They decided to hunt public this year and went over the the guys ranch just to talk to him, rancher had all his signs up and lockout out for first week, then the rancher went into town just to find out all his buddys he was supporting was allowing hunting because the felt it wasnt working or whatever. Pissed him off somthin terrible. Gave them permission to hunt.

I really dont care what you guys do because i myself have places to hunt and dont need your place or anyone elses who feels like the wildlife is theirs, even tho you feed them. Thats just part of being a landowner. We got lots of pheasants around here but i dont bench to the gfp when one hits my grill and busts it up. thats just part of livin where i do. I have hit my share of deer before and i know the only way to help control the animals is to hunt them, and not allowing hunting wont help the population. Its kind of like not voting but yet bench because the wrong guy got elected.....just dont make sense. Oh well, I just get off on getting your dander up!

I think the hunting season should be at night and road hunting should be allowed. Shoot the deer in the road ditch. Deer off the road, hunters got a place to go. Everyone is happy. I am not crazy, I am serious.

You might have something there, smalltime! :D  The last time I came home from town after dark the deer were out in force in the road ditches. My guys from RC are here hunting goats this weekend. They will come back during deer season. The odds are they might have better luck hunting deer in Rapid City than out here! :D

I've tried to get the legislature to introduce a law, making it not only legal, but manditory, to shoot any deer in the road ditches, with a shot gun of course.

I know of a stretch of road where some of the locals took it upon themselves to do this. The deer were still there afterwards, but when they saw or heard a vehicle coming, the ran AWAY from the outfit. Worked real good, I guess. It was kind of a covert operation.

Of course, the GFP wouldn't like it, as then they couldn't sell licenses. And it seems to me, that is about the only thing they are really concerned with. At least out here, west river. I don't know, and car less what they do back east river. Evidently from what I've read, everybody east river just loves them GFP guys.

Why don't you hunters come to Northern minnesota to hunt lots of public land and lots of deer. And no problems with the anti-government crowd come on up you can hunt all you want. And if you get a deer on my land you can drive your truck up to it and get it.Grass is dormant this time of year and useally grazed off by now and if not some tire tracks are'nt going to hurt anything. But the game warden might stop you so be legal and they are nice guys who have a house a wife and even some kids that love them.
