seed strippers

Never seen a seed stripper in the south, so i'll lean on you midwestern folks. How do you think a seed stripper would fair with bahaia seed and more importantly rye/ryegrass seed? The attraction vs combining would be that i could still cut hay behind a stripper unless i'm mistaken. Any feedback would be help.

Good morning luke. I'm not sure what kind of stripper you are refering to. Shelburne Reynolds headers are popular in Rice, south of here. They work well I hear but their main benefit is their ability to reduce volume in the combine where you can run faster. Brush roller type strippers also work but the rough seed is nasty but from what I've seen, grades fine. I don't think either one will have a positive impact in the hay quality. We swath and combine or cut it off the stump and in either case you have to let the straw dry down some and you have to let the seed mature. Both cases result in less protien in the resulting hay but we cut all our hay and cows eat it pretty good. Some years the hay is better quality than others depending on the amount of rain. I'm not sure if I've addressed you question but let me know if you have any more.
