With the market up and nobody is really sure why or how long it will hold I am going to try selling the company calves on Fridays Superior Fort Worth Sale. IF anyone is interested they are Lot#4365A and 4365B. They are fall delivery weaned calves. If you have any questions pm me. I would like to hear ideas on what is driving the market now because I don't see a lot of things different from last year. Thanks

I can't figure out why it is so high right now. I saw in the tri-state livestock news, some pairs were bringing over $1500. We have a few old cows we were going to sell in the fall, but I'm taking some pairs with steer calves over to St. Onge today. The price is just too good. Selling some open heifers too and a couple of darn good bulls. We just won't need them.

The weigh-up cow market is pretty good right now, also.

I sold one on Tuesday that weighed 1550 pounds and brought $64.50 per cwt., for a total of $999.75. Sparky gave me a quarter so I could say my weigh-up cow brought a thousand dollars. Others that I sold that day were as follows:

1275# @ 64.00 $816.00
1255# @ 69.25 $869.09
1070# @ 79.00 $845.30 (two-year-old heiferette)
1285# @ 67.00 $860.95
1080# @ 58.50 $631.80 (slight lump on jaw)
1100# @ 74.00 $814.00 (four-year-old cow)
1240# @ 65.00 $806.00
1550# @ 64.50 $999.75 (pret' near a thousand  )
1265# @ 59.00 $746.35
1105# @ 71.00 $784.55
1170# @ 56.25 $658.12
1160# @ 76.00 $881.60

Anyway, I was happy with the market. :-)

Go to next April's live cattle and work price backwards. That's the reason for the high prices now.
Comments made to me about the weigh-up prices were 'we got past that small dairy buyout' :???:

Those are some dang good prices Soap. I just can't see keeping some cows that we planned on selling in a few months anyhow. It would be great if this market maintained, but I don't see how it can. Hopefully I'm proven wrong, but it seems unhealthily high at the moment. A lot of times it goes real high and then REAL low. I wish it would stay a little more on an even keel. Who needs a casino, when you gamble right at home?

I took four head to auction a couple of weeks ago and averaged $.60 / lb, about $800 per head average (I don't have the slip in front of me). This is just over 5 times I received for cows sold in the dark days of 2003.
It makes me wonder, the border is open so why are prices so good south of the 49th?

They sold killer bulls for $88.00 cwt around here bout 2 weeks ago. I couldn't believe it but for some of them bulls it's a 1500-2000 dollar check.

Soap, I was pleased with the May 10 weigh-up market in Faith. It was a rainy day and they didn't have a very big sale. Once they got going it was over in less than 2 hours. Even though they were not the same color, my cows sold comparable to yours.

850# @ 88.50 $752.25 (sweet young Herf thing)
1205# @ 63.00 $759.15 (wet mix X cow)
1560# @ 64.00 $998.40 (big fat blkX dry cow)

I would have needed $1.60 to get a even $1K on the big dry.

It was interesting to note large char bulls were selling at a better price than black bulls, even if they were a bit gimpy or had other slight defects. :???: :???: :???:

Sorry cowboyup, I realize none of us have addressed the question you posted. As you can see, at the moment we are content to take the money and run! :P 8)

I watched part of The Big Blue Sale Barn sale yesterday as I have friends who were selling on there and the market seems to be weakening already and on the Northern Ag Market Reports the top slaughter bulls were @78 so the market seems to have weakened about $5 over the last two weeks. On the other side I cashed in a couple of bulls and a cull cow at Three Forks two weeks ago.

1 blk bull 2065 @ 83.00/C
1 blk bull 1885 @ 80.50/C
1 bwf cow 1495 @ 63.25/C

Almost paid for the 3 replacement bulls that I had to buy

Personally, I think the killer cow market is going to pause and cool down for a couple of weeks/months but later this summer or fall we could see some real fireworks. I wouldn't be surprised to see killer fat cows selling for .75 at that time.
