Over the last year or so I've talked to/been asked about finding Shoshone bloodline seedstock now that both Shoshone and Horse Butte are dropping the registration papers...Here is a Shoshone bloodline bull that was raised in Nebraska and that Taylor Orr now has in Montana..

In talking to Taylor today- he sent me a new picture of Shea Emo... Definitely turned into a fine looking bull...And the Shoshone breeding sure shows..

He also said that besides Sustainable Genetics- Universal Semen in Great Falls is now handling semen for him also:

Is there some reason that a 50k genomic profile has not been done on this bull or SNP parentage? The EPD accuracies are pretty low for a bull of that age.

PATB-- I have no idea as I have nothing to do with the bull-- except for knowing that the current owner raises some fantastic maternal cattle and in my dealings with him is as honest as you can come by...

Like me--I don't think Taylor puts a huge amount of credence on EPD's and numbers as long as their progeny prove up to be able to keep the qualities of his herd going-especially the maternal ones- altho in years past I know he did do ultrasounding for Tallgrass Beef...

As far as the DNA testing- like I mentioned on the other site- I did some on the lead bull I have- (altho I went thru Igenity instead of Pfizer) and came up with no surprises- altho his CE went up a couple of points on his EPD's ( from a 7 to a 10 - which I was already pretty sure of from his build and the calves he sired I had seen born)... Lazy Bar B Juanada Rito 06X 16741353...
The younger 2 year old bull I'm using this year- Lazy Bar B Bannon 2 BY 17049646 - I may test with the Pfizer 50K just to see the difference--
BUT
still the main deciding points on use will be based on feet, legs, body structure (total phenotype), and how they look- and then their genotype- especially with grandmaternal history .... And after culling some 8-10 year old cows today for feet problems- sired from some of the old bigger better faster bulls I used to use- it reminds me even more the importance of breeding good structure...

Just like with many of the old horse breeders- I believe you can predict more looking back at the Dams side and the maternal side of the sires side than just at the sire......

Darn sure don't need any $400,000 bulls to make some very good momma cows that can raise some nice calves....

What phenotype traits do you appreciate about this bull?

First off feet and legs... Taylor said his feet are great and his daughters are too... Straight back and depth thru out-- plus one trait the Shoshone bulls are known for is their masculinity- and when they grow out they look like bulls...

PatB- One of the reasons the EPD accuracies are low is that I think he has primarily been being used mostly in a commercial herds for the last couple of years- which his calves would not reflect in the EPD's...
Its about the same that Diamond D often does- and then after being proven up in a commercial herd- they go back and rebuy the bull and use in their herds...
The double bred Bannon bull I have- I leased out last year as I had no use for him- and wanted to see more how he growed out... I'll take a long look at his calves that come this spring before I decide how and how much I want to use him-- altho just like his sire and grandsire he has some of the best feet and legs I've seen on a bull for sometime-- along with a maternal history for some time back on both sides of the papers...

He looks kinda thin boned to me through his front legs. :? Hard to tell from pictures though without watching him travel. As long as you like him, it sure doesnt matter what i think. :D

And if you have ever followed any of the Keeney/Larry Leonard discussions on Keeney's Corner--- he also has the Shoshone long full tail switch ..

If you have more questions give Taylor Orr a call at the Whitney Creek Ranch 406-932-5838 or e-mail him at [email protected] ....I've bought several bulls and heifers from Taylor over the last few years- a couple sight unseen from his sales- and found that you can darn sure ride his word to the bank...

I agree. I sure like the type of bull he is. At least he isnt a giraffe like some we see.
