Our daughter bought one of those new fangled picture takin' devices like mine. She has better pics than I do, and am trying to talk her into posting some of them. We'll wait & see if she listens to her daddy????????   :?

Posing before we go to work. Snappy is side stepping nicely.

Concho is packing a good neighbor and hand . Mostly as good a friend as a guy could ask for. He has two brothers that fit the same category.

Pikes Peak or bust--off to find our fourtune. The grass situation is better than these pictures show. This fence corner is pretty tromped out.

George Ray, another good neighbor and friend is headed for the gate.

Number 3 daughter on the dismount. George Ray is off his horse. Jason has drug his end of the panels around; Snappy & I (not shown) are dragging our end of the panels (on a rope) past Jasons end to form an alley to sort from.

We let the cows and heifer calves out as we were just taking steers today.

A heifer pair seems willing to get on the bus

At the barn. Steers averaged 590, which is down, but this was our first year calving 30 days later. These calves were born March 20 and after.

do you like your Circle D trailer???

the winter of 93 and 94 I spent building them. I would reccomend not owning one built in those two years!!!

The Circle D is Jason's mom's trailer. It has served them well as far a I know. They like it I think. Mine is a Titan. The Heifer pair is by it, and the tail is in the picture of us riding out. Hi, 3 way. Are you folks getting snow? Snow showers here. At Castle Rock, #3 daughter has about 10 inches now.

Keep the pics coming! We used Chars as a terminal cross....it was easy to see when the AI was done and cleanups started. We found our own Gelbvieh cross bulls did better than the Chars. Maybe we can figure out how to make a Gelbvieh purple so we know when the cleanups start :P

Shortgrass,

I always appreciate good looking calves...Yours have nice depth...

I was wondering a few things...

What lines of bulls do you tend to use?

Also.......I am assuming the later calving was to match the seasons and make it less work and easier on the cattle....Do you retain ownership through the feeding? It would be interesting to see if those calves can catch up to your old averages on feed....

Good luck and thanks for sharing,

PPRM

We will not follow these steers through. We have kept heifers, so maybe they will tell us a story. We like a bull line called Avalanche real well, then Unlimited Ease calves have performed well. Eliminator is a good line or Western Jack. I am trying a couple of Tradewind bulls. I'll know more next year. I watch capacity, and thickness pretty close. I started calving later mostly because it is just harder to deal with blizzards than it used to be. Don't understand what is happening to my endurance the last 10 years! I saved more calves, had less sickness, fed less hay and was just easier. Should have done it sooner.

Those are a nice bunch of Charolais calves, Shortgrass. They weighed good for being born later than you usually calve. Looks like you had a competent cowboy crew to help get the job done and a nice day to do it. The wind doesn't appear to have been a problem. That is the cowboy life at its finest. :-)

Very nice bunch of calves!.....just curious...since they are "glow in the dark" kind, do ya ever work em at night? LOL

We tried it once...with our "non glow in the dark" kind....and I flat refused to ever do that again!!!!

I could tell a little story about moving cattle at night.. Sarah & I moved some black cattle at night one time to keep the next day open. Yeh, I prefer the daylight even with white cattle.

Nice looking calves. The white ones on this place belong to the littlest girl here. Since hers are the only white ones she sold on Monday with our neigbor who also has Charlaios/Angus cross. They averaged 585 and brought $1.16. The market here keeps getting softer. However, with the fact Grandma and Papa gave her the one that started it all and we provide the pasture she made a profit$$.

I hope you don't mind me asking Shortgrass...what part of Colorado are you from?
I was curious because we are looking at a place near Yoder. I have been trying to get some information online but with little towns like that it's hard to find anything. Are you familiar with that area?
We sent the inlaws out to look at the place about a month ago and they Loved it. We will be seeing it in December.
You have some mighty fine looking cattle there by the way
Have a great day all!!

Why is it these daughters always seem to make a profit? Mine is the same way.

She did make a profit and with the Charlaios they aren't tame just out in the pasture unlike the 4-H calf. Last year when Clover left on the truck she cried and cried. I think she almost had Grandma and I convinced to keep him until Papa just reminded us we'd eventially get to eat him if he stayed around.

Oh My Goodness! I really didn't expect you to be that close to Yoder! I'm so glad you are. When I have the time I will bombard you with questions
I did find out the grandsons will have a 18 mile bus ride to school. It's ok though, they ride it 16 miles here!
We have some cows spending their winter in Ellicott so at least they won't have far to move   We won't be moving the cows here until March or so. IF everything works out the way we want it to.
Thank you for the offer of information, I really really appreciate it!!!!
