Macon, I hope advertising another website here is ok. I didn't see anything in the rules against it, but if there is please let me know.

For those of us fools who feel that Shorthorns are well and truly the best critters walking, I think we should get a little more involved in Heterosis.com. They've now got a discussion board going, and they could really use a little more input from the Shorthorn breeders out there.

Rod,

I too would like to see more discussion and activitiy on the http://www.heterosis.com

Viewed your post about Durham red/ Durham Black. Should generate some interest. Shorthorn have a long history with benefits in crossbreeding programs. Many breeds of cattle started with Shorthorn cows.

I hope so. I was somewhat disappointed by how heavily the CSA/ASA were promoting the Durham Reds, while ignoring the other crosses out there that have been used for decades.

While those of us who run Shorthorns understand that hide color isn't an indicator of quality, I still think we'd be crazy to not pay some attention to those black hides that the buyers want. I'd never want to see a "Black Shorthorn", but some attention paid to blue and black roans wouldn't be a bad thing.

I looked at shorthorns when I started thinking about switching the bull battery.. oh 2-3 years ago.. Problem was most that I talked to kept saying the same thing, that they had gone towards the show circuit so far that they just weren't what I was looking for.. Of course, since they knew I was tired of some of the extreme features on the Maines that we were using it only made sense for them that I wouldn't be interested in shorties... Reading that Heterosis page it seems as if there is a a bit of.. Uhm.. stress /divison in the members over this issue as well..

I am sure there are still good ones out there and if I wanted some I could find them as every breed seems to have issues with steer jockey breeding and such... From what I was told the herd over in Watseka, IL isn't all that bad but who knows.

IL, the breed is beginning to make a resurgence after many years of stagnating on the show circuit. There were many beef Shorthorn breeders left out there, but unfortunately they weren't very visible.

I bought a very easy keeping bull from Northern Ranchers area last year. He isn't quite what I'd like to see in my purebred bulls, but he would make a heckuva commercial bull. I've just started getting some calves from him this year.

There are some big volume bulls out there though. Its just a matter of looking. I like Saskvalley's stuff out of Rosthern, SK. Easy keeping, good growth, and phenotypically ideal.

Is that you listed as the buyer of the Primo Bull from Sask Valley? They do have some nice thick looking bulls on their page.. If I had seen a place like this near here 4+ years ago when we bought our first set of bulls I might have bought some... Would have ticked the neighbor off but that is always fun, lol.

About 15 years ago the Haydock's had a shorthorn bull in the ROP test at the U of S-he was the best bull of any breed that year-it's too bad that test is gone some good bulls came out of there over the years. They werren't totally overfed like some are.

Unfortunately, no. I think that Primo bull was one of the best, if not the best of the lot last year. I didn't have the bucks last year to play with the big boys though, and my 3 top picks ended up being #1, #2 and #4 of the sale.

Just asked becasue it said it was sold to Diamond Shorthorns or something like that.. Kind of like your screen name..Oh well, he looked nice.. I like some of their herd bull pictures, just gotta get past the Roan color as it is not something I see often (Not saying it is bad, just need to kind of imagine the bull as a solid color to compare to other soild bulls)

Kind of good and kind of bad when your top picks sell so high.. I guess it is affirmation that you are picking some bulls that are in demand but it stinks when you can't get them.....

il rancher u have some real nice herds in illinois. http://www.leveldale.com/
http://www.cagwincattle.com/
these are just a few. But the illinois association is a very good one. They promote the breed as hard as anybody and they have show cattle and good comercial cattle. Check out leveldales website they have been there and done it.The shorthorn breed has been introduced into 33 differant breeds BLACK ANGUS included. They were the first breed in america. When you get your first commercial shorty calf you never go back.Theres a bull sale coming up in indiana that if your not to far from it you should check it out. Its a cowboy auction format of solid red, thick meat plants. Heres the website with catalog. Avery impressive set of bulls with the numbers to back them up and some very wonderful people selling them.

theres the paperwork on the bulls.
The breed has a little squabbling in amongst itself with the show people and the commercial bull guys. But thats in all breeds the people that i have met traveling around are all just wonderful and represent the breed very well. If you want show cattle you go to these and commerial bulls you got to them thats just kinda how it works. lol good luck and may everybodys calves squirt out a runnin!
