Shot my first mule deer

Well, we went out this afternoon, saw a buck, dad shot. I ran acorss the field to a cutline, and waited. he walked down the line (walk the line..... Johnny Cash like). I settled my sights behind his front shoulder..... KABLAM!!!!! KABLAM!!! He hit the ground, got up and lit out. My gun jammed on me (always does at the worst times)and I heard another two shots up the hill. Confident I hit him hard, I started after him right away after telling dad what happened. Dad said, "Alex, I hope you diddn't look at his antlers, cause Im sure he'll go 200 +. All I found where he was standing was a LOT of hair, and a speckle of blood. With a sick feeling in my stomach, I lit out running after him. I saw him up the field and readied my rifle but he ran into a bush. I trailed him for 1 1/2 miles, and it got too dark. I knew I should have taken another second, but if he rean that fast and that hard, he should be ok. I hope it never happens again, cause now I feel real bad, and guilty. All dad could say when he saw how upset was, "atleast you diddnt do it to a big one".
